Just a little reminder for your day spent on Castaway Cay......Be sure to lather up with your sunscreen at least four times during the day. We had waterproof spf 50 and applied it twice during the day and still got burned. The temperatures were only in the eighties but it was intense. By the end of the day, I saw alot of purple sun poisoned looking folks. Be sure to apply lotion to your scalps, ears, shoulders and backs.

And if you go back to the ship early because it is cloudy and sit outside by the pool, don't forget to apply the sunscreen again. The sun is brutal, and DH paid the price for not reapplying the sunscreen when he sat out by the pool.
We were continuing our stay at the DolphinL for 2 nights and I had to go to Publix and buy him some regular vinegar to take the sting out. We paid $12 for some aftersun ointment at the Dolphin but it didn't do any good.

When you apply the vinegar did you sponge it on full strengh? We plan on using lots of sunscreen & often but just incase would like to know how to use the vinegar.

I didn't know vinegar helped sunburns either. That is good to know! I would also like to know if it goes on full strength or if you add water to it.
Thanks for the tip!!!

Hi!

White vinegar is a great thing to have with you -- I am going to add it to my list, just in case. Here's how you use it in case of a sunburn.

1. Get some extra facecloths.
2. Put vinegar on the cloth.
3. Apply the wet cloth to the skin & hold it in place.
4. It will soak up the heat.
5. Rinse cloth in cold water, put on more vinegar and repeat.

One big problem with sunburn is that you keep cooking for a long time after you have gone inside. So, this seems to help that.

Note, I am not a dermotologist, but I have light skin and this worked for me when I got a burn once. Be sure to follow it with aloe vera gel, as it is very soothing.

You use the vinegar full-strength. We soak paper towels in vinegar and then let it sit on the sunburn and it draws the heat out. Another good thing to use is called "After-Burn", it's an aloe vera gel that you can find at WalMart and the like... I think it's made by a company called Family Medic.
The best cure is prevention. We snorkel all over the Caribbean, and ALWAYS wear a very long t-shirt, especially in the water. You may feel like you look silly, but you'll look even worse with a bad sunburn.

Is to mix it half and half with rubbing alcohol and use it as ear drops to prevent swimmers ear. I am taking a bottle for that reason. Frankly I don't trust the pool water and a kid with an ear infection is a miserable thing.

I have used vinegar in the past and it works pretty well. Just a warning it burns when you put it on newly baked skin!

You might want to take a shower right after you get burnt and soap down really well, then pat yourself dry with a towel. Next apply lotion (some with aloe is the best). Put several coats of lotion on. Next wrap up in some warm clothes. A sunburn plus the night air equals chills. Repeat applying the lotion the next day.

Hopefully this helps someone.....

..white vinegar in your bath will help also.

I am speachless....the number of warnings given to apply sunscreen is obsessive - navigator, ship announcements, recodings on the trams...etc. Why do people still come back from the island looking like lobsters??????

If this helps one person...I'll try - again. I am from PHOENIX, ARIZONA...we live 1 mile from the sun....ok...it's hot....$#mn hot.

This sunday will be my 37th year here....I've never felt heat as intense than at CC in May.

IF YOU NORMALLY USE SPF30....DOUBLE IT...TRIPPLE THE TIMES YOU APPLY IT. DON'T ruin your return trip home/start touring the parks with 2nd/3rd degree burns.

Figures, the last time I was in Phoenix (around 1988) it snowed for the first time since Arizona became a state.

We were out in Phoenix/Tempe area two weeks ago for my son's ASU orientation. Man that was hot....but I know it's a dry heat!! LOL..even saw a T-shirt stating that fact!!!

We are from New York so we have hot & humid but never have we gotten to 106....like it was every day we were out in AZ!!!

Loved the area...I'll be heading back out in August when my son starts school for studen/parent week.

When we were in our mid-20's, my younger sister & I went on a (first & only) trip alone together touring CA. She has always been very jealous of me (& I was of her growing up - go figure!! - girls!! )
Anyway, we were at Redondo Beach & I told her that we should lather up good & only lay out 1 hr. & then cover up. I don't really burn, but she does. I still remember her exact words, "No, YOU cover up in an hour. You just want to get darker than me. I'm staying out an extra hour".
Well, that's what we did and needless to say, she looked like a lobster that evening in the motel. She was in agony!
We went to the motel desk & asked what we could possibly do to relieve the pain & lessen the burn. I don't know if the clerks were sadistic, ignorant or what, but they told us to go buy Noxema skin cream and to lather up real well with it. Not knowing any better - the saps that we were - we went out & bought a BIG jar of Noxema.
I remember telling her that my best friend used it on her face all of the time & I think it burns. Well, that's ALL I had to say - she thought I didn't want her to lose her color.

SO.....I'll never forget it - it's funny now, but it sure wasn't then - she went into the bathroom & COATED herself with the Noxema. At first, the coolness must have felt good because she was talking away and then, all of a sudden, I heard a blood curdling scream and, obviously, the Noxema began penetrating her skin & scorching her even more.

The end of this (long) story is: I had to rush her to the emergency room where they washed her, packed her in cool rags, gave her RX's & said she had severe sun burn, sun poisoning & sun stroke & we couldn't continue our scheduled trip for the next 3 days. :earseek:

Most folks dont realize this but spf 30 provides the optimal protection, higher protection factors such as 45
provide only marginal extra protection, something on the order of 1-2%, so its not really worth it. Best bet is to cover up and wear a hat and use spf 30 waterproof on anything you cant cover. Remember that if you go snorkeling , to wear a tee shirt.
It takes about 1/2 an hour after application for sunscreen to give you the protection it is supposed to as it takes a little time to be absorbed into the skin.

Last June, we came to Florida to get married on the beach at Destin. One day, we spent all morning and most of the afternoon on the beach. Three days before the wedding -- you guessed it -- my back was glowing bright red and I was in agony.

So here I go off to every drugstore in the Destin area spending about half of our total trip budget on anything that had the word "relief" on the label.

About a hundred dollars later, there was still no real relief. It was better by our wedding night, but I learned my lesson BIG TIME.

EVERYONE on our recent Wonder cruise got EXTRA sunscreen applied, and there were no complaints for the rest of the cruise. That incredible pain and itching I went through will be etched on my mind forever.
