Sorry for the dumb questions, but here goes...How does everyone pronounce the "Cay" in Castaway Cay? "Kay" like the girls name or "Key" like the thing that opens locks? :confused3

I always want to call it Kay but my sister calls it Key...she's been there, I haven't so I'm thinking she would know..but why would they spell it Cay and pronounce it key?

somewhere on my first cruise last year, I heard something on castaway cay making fun of noobies pronouncing it as 'kay'. Sadly, I was one of those people.
Needless to say, 'key' is the sound you're lookin' for.

According to that, it can be pronounced both ways. However, on the ship, I've always heard everyone say "key". I spent a couple years in the Caribbean, and we always said "kay". I still say "kay"; and if someone thinks of me as a noobie for saying it that way, so be it. As long as I'm on vacation, I'm happy!

FanOfFigment,

Where does it say in the article it can be pronounced both way's?
I think everyone should pronounce it the way they want, but just wondering as I can't see where your referencing?

A cay ( /ˈkiː/ or /ˈkeɪ/),

On the wiki page, if you hover over the second letter in the second one it shows "long a as in base" --> Kay for pronunciation.

I'm from Florida where they say it and spell it KEY. So much easier.

Cool!

I searched a bit and found this article as well about it:
"The English used "Cay" or "Kay" such as Cay Sal Banks. Some English pronounce "Cay" as 'key' while others say 'Kay.' English maps of the Keys made just prior to the Revolutionary War of 1776 used the word "Key." A Colonial American court record of the "Libel of Dennis and Allen vs the snow St. Fermin alias Britanis" in 1744 used the word "Keys" referring to the Florida Keys. See the Admiralty Papers, Vol. 2, 1743 -1744."

I guess local dialect determines the pronunciation a bit as well!

Yeah, that's what DH was telling me when he saw this topic earlier; but I didn't feel like looking it up to make sure he was right before posting about the history stuff, so I went with the pronunciation thingy from Wikipedia.

Did you sister tell you that Parrot Cay is pronounced Key as well? :)
