Super silly question but it is driving me crazy. I have never talked to someone in person about Castaway Cay. BUT my mom did the other day and she swears they pronounced it KEY not CAY. Which is right? So confused.:confused3

I've been confused too. Still, I hear a LOT of people say Cay. Isn't that the same with CocoCay and Half Moon Cay? Anyway my question is what CC is considered... Bahamas, FL keys and US or does it matter cuz no one lives on it and there is no jurisdiction? That is my question.

Cataway Cay is part of the Bahamas.

A cay (also spelled caye or key;) pronounced as "key"

I am a proud American monoglot and I think of English as ESL (English as a Stupid Language).

Here's a link to a dictionary - that defines "Cay" and if you click on the speaker button you can hear it's pronunciation.

oh yea, you can look up monoglot here also.

That just means A LOT of people are wrong :lmao:

What doesn't help is the castaway 5k!! Because then it's just a play on words! Lol

About 45 to 60 cast members live full time on the island, year round!!!

While it is properly "key" and I know that quite well, I think Disney made it more difficult to say properly by putting Castaway in front it. I just want to rhyme!!!

Castaway Cay/Key was formerly known as Gorda Cay which is easy to find info/history on via Google-ing. Definitely a part of the Bahamas...gotta have Bahamian postage to send postcards from the island.

We always stop at the post office there (so cute) to mail ourselves a postcard with Bahamian stamps to have when we get home!

I mean absolutely NO offense here, but this is something that drives me crazy.

If you are going to travel to a foreign country (including the Bahamas), take 5 minutes to learn a little about the place you are going, proper pronunciation, local customs, etc.

Nothing makes people look dumber than being in a foreign country and pronouncing its name improperly, IMO. The phrase "stupid Americans" really rings true sometimes and it's embarrassing.

And, to be honest, I completely understand the "kay" pronunciation here, but once you are aware, say it right!!!

If in doubt, on a cruise, take your cues from the way the captain of the ship pronounces it. ;)

Yes, take clues from crew but remember that they may have an accent that isn't expected to translate to American.
When I was in organic chemistry all of my professors were British and they taught us about ME-thane. Finally a friend of mine couldn't take it anymore. They pointed out that's its methane (with a short e). Didn't even occur to me that I was speaking of the same thing. I picked up so many British pronunciations and it took years to undo it.
