I bought a cast iron skillet last week and seasoned it (heated it up on top of the stove shut it off then added some oil~not sure if I did that correct or not??) I cooked in it a couple times well this morning my DH cooked scrambled eggs in it and it stuck....What should I do now???

Youre actually supposed to BAKE it with the oil in it to season it.

You would have to have some serious grease in there to cook eggs in a new pan.

That is the one thing I do not cook in a cast iron skillet is eggs. Now if I had my mom's skillet which is about 30+yrs old, then OK.

We actually have no problem cooking eggs in our CI skillet. We never did the baking thing, but we do always give it a shot of olive oil when we cook. Acutally, we heat it up, spray the oil (we have a mister), and then let the oil heat up a little more. Then, and only then, do we put anything in it to cook. I do eggs, brown meat, make quesedillas, sautee veggies, and lots more in it. I love it!!

Usually I just wipe it clean after cooking with a paper towel, but once in a while something burns and gets stuck. I know some people will turn their noses up at this, but in those instances I do rinse it and use the rough side of the sponge to get the stuff off. After I wash it, I heat it up again, spray with oil, and turn off the stove, leaving the hot oil to soak in.

I wash my CI after every use.

I use hot water, and a green scrubbie. NO SOAP!

When it is clean, I dry it, and while warm spray some non-stick cooking spray. Then I wipe the excess spray out.

I have had it for a few years now, and it is just starting to get a bit of that non-stick to it.

I am in the minority here, but I always hand wash my cast iron frying pans after I use them. They're probably at least 40 years old too, so well seasoned.

I've got a couple of cast iron skillets I use all the time, always wash with soap and water and I never have a problem with them. They are well seasoned though. Once in a while I cook bacon in them and that will season them faster than any other meathod I've tried.

My cast iron was seasoned by baking with oil before the first use and then each time I wash it, I re-do the process. I don't leave it in the oven as long each time.

I don't have a problem with it sticking, but I don't cook eggs in it, I use my non-stick skillet for that so that I don't have to use as much oil/butter for the eggs. The main things I love the cast iron for is biscuits and cornbread!! YUM!

Only "wash" your CI skillets with water and sea salt, rinse and dry thoroughly, then rub with oil or spray with cooking spray before you put it away. Then wait several years to get that deep down wonderful seasoning. And DO NOT trust my husband to take care of it or you will have to start all over again...:headache:

This is what I do with mine too. I love my cast iron and have dropped some not-so-subtle hints to DH about wanting one for Christmas!

You all are making me want to try another cast iron skillet. I've never had any luck with them. I've followed all the tips for seasoning, but everything I ever try to make in them ends up sticking. I wouldn't even dream of trying eggs.

Yep use the sea salt to get that gook off. Just a little water sprinkle with sea salt and scrub.
Then rub in some oil- and place it in the oven on low for about half an hour.
MMM steaks in a cast iron- mmmmmmmmm

That's how we do our steaks also--in a CI pan! OMGosh, so much better than on the grill! We brown them quickly stovetop and put them into the oven for a few minutes. They taste great and are extremely tender!

Going to try to season it again by putting it in the oven....Thanks

As others have said, seasoning isn't a one time thing. It takes me a long time to season my CI to the point that I can cook in it w/o sticking.

The advice I got with mine was to get some lard and rub a little into it after each use. (Salt rubbed to clean). Then, when I cooked in the newer ones, it's either liberally coated in butter, oil or pam and then I cook.

My chicken fryer took a good 4 years to get that blackened look. Now, I don't even need to use anything in the pan to cook w/o sticking and can wash with soap. Alas, my new stove gets scratched up with the cast, so it's only getting used when we go camping.
