Yes! We're in too. We already made a small donation to the Zion National Park Foundation through a family Charitable Gift Fund, but we'd certainly contribute to some physical rememberance of Bill...whatever the family thinks is appropriate.

I really like the idea of a bench, but in some ways, something we could all see to remember him by at WDW might be an appropriate action for this group. I'm not sure if they are still doing the "leave a legacy" tiles, but if they are, that would be nice.

I wanted to share some comments sent to me by Bill's wife, Peg. They are about the service this coming Tuesday and the Cemetary in Rock Island, IL.

"The Visitation for family is 4-5/ for friends and acquaintenances is 5-7 with a brief prayers service at 7 pm. by a priest from our church, then military taps outside the funeral home and 21 gun salute (that's the closest to Disney fireworks we can arrange).

Bill will be cremated and I will take him (with Family) to the Rock Island Arsenal Nation Cemetary which is across the river where we grew up and got married. So he is returning home and my father (who is already there) --can teach Bill...the newest arrival... the "ropes" and "fast pass" process. That was his wish and I will do all in my power to honor just that. "

From Bill's brother John, I learned that Bill was also an organ donor - so he will continue giving to others as he always has done. John also included comment about the Cemetary -

"This is a beautiful cemetery on a very large island in the Mississippi River, between Rock Island Illinois and Davenport Iowa. So he will be coming home. There will be a small service in the Quad-Cities at that time."

and John went on to add -

"Several people have asked about sending cards. They can send a card if they wish to the funeral home, and they will make sure that Peg gets them."

What a wonderful family for a wonderful man! :)

Those who wish may also sign the Guest Book (with whatever comments you want to make). Just go to Doc's original post and click on the obituary link.

I suspect the funeral home is going to be overwhelmed with the volume of guest book sign-ins. I doubt they are prepared to deal with a very large Internet community like this one. They review each entry for appropriateness, so be patient.

Thanks for the further information, Rob. That national cemetary sounds like a wonderful spot!

Sung to the melody of Abraham, Martin and John (for those of us in Bill's era)

Has anybody here seen our old friend Bill?
Can you tell me where he's gone?
He helped a lot of people, but it seems the good they die young...
And I just looked around, and he's gone.

Has anbody here seen our old friend Bill?
He helped us plan vacations...
But they say the good they die young...
And I just looked around, and he's gone.

There was no one more helpful and friendly,
He always had a ready smile...
He donated hours of computer knowledge
And even GPSed our walking tours.

Has anybody here seen my old friend Bill?

Diane, that was very well said.

I would love to help towards either a bench or something at WDW in Bill's memory. That being said, I am heading over to sites that JimMIA suggested to make a donation myself.

Thanks to you all for your support in our time of need. My Dad's favorite park was Zion National Park in Utah with Bryce Canyon National Park being a close second. He and my Mom Peg both enjoyed all the trails in this little piece of heaven on earth. As a family we spent a lot of time in Great Smokey Mountains National Park while my sister Kathy and I were growing up. Both of us were given a life long love of the wilderness by our times spent here. I am an avid backpacker because of my Dad, who always wished he could have come with me my long hikes. So if you are able to make a donation to any of these three parks, I know my Dad would have been very grateful. Again, thanks for all the support, it has really helped the family as we mourn the greatest man I have ever known. Mike Neth, CaskBill's Son

Mike, I am so sorry for your loss. I just wanted to let you know that I made a donation to Zion a few minutes ago. Unfortunately, I couldn't find a note section in the form to document that it was in memory of your father.

Zion National Park
The non-profit partner for Zion National Park is the Zion National Park Foundation, which is the fundraising arm of the Zion Natural History Association. The foundation was just formed in 2007, so I'm sure donations there would be greatly appreciated.

Their web URL is www.zionpark.org/foundation. This is the official fundraiser specifically designated by the Superintendent of Zion National Park and it is a non-profit.

I can tell you from personal experience that the benefit of donating directly to a specific park is that the expenditures are decided at the local level with direct input from the local park managers. Therefore, expenditures tend to be more focused on the precise needs of that park, rather than some national or regional initiative.

Bryce Canyon National Park
I'll research further through our sources here at Everglades on Monday, but I was not able to find a separate non-profit for Bryce Canyon. When I do a search, all I get is the National Parks Foundation. NPF accepts donations for many of the parks which don't have their own non-profits.

For anyone who wants to learn more about either of these beautiful places, the individual park websites are as follows:

Zion: www.nps.gov/zion
Bryce: www.nps.gov/brca

JimMIA, thank you so much for researching this information for us.

I made my donation through Fidelity Investments, so I didn't go to the foundation's donation page.

Go back to the foundation's website and look for "Contact us" or similar. Send an email to Linda Hafen, the Executive Director of the natural history association and tell her your donation is in Bill's memory. If that fails, PM me and I'll notify her through NPS email...when it eventually comes back up (sigh...again...sigh).

Oh no! I missed the update that said he passed away :(. I will really miss him.

Mike thank you for posting. Your dad was trully one of the DIS gentlemen :grouphug:

I am so sorry to read this news. Our thoughts and prayers go out to you and your family. He will always be remembered and missed dearly on Dis. I am saddened by this news. :grouphug:

Doc, thanks for keeping us all informed.

Mike, my condolences, thoughts and prayers to you and you family at this sad time.

I think that donating to a NP in memory of Bill is a wonderful idea.

My prayers continue for Bill's family at this sad time.

Bobbi
