Hi all,

What does everyone take these days....$cash, travellers cheques or do you just use your credit card?

Last time we went we used TC but I read a post awhile back from an american lady who was concerned that many of us Brits were carrying too much cash around with us and getting it out at the check-outs, and advising us not to for safety reasons.

Just wondered what everyones preferences were....be interesting to find out.

Thanks for your time....have a nice day :)

we will be taking a small amount of cash, and some TC's for smaller bits, but most of shopping and meals will be on our Nationwide credit card as they don't charge a fee for transactions not in Sterling, so the exchange rate is usually better than you get changing your money.

We always take tc and cash. DH takes his credit card just in case its needed but we always make use of the safes in the hotels whether they are in the room or at reception.

We have our nationwide credit card (opened in time for my new york trip last year) and we have mostly travellers cheques and my left over cash from NY.

The last couple of times we've been, we used the American Express TC card and it was an absolute doddle. We loaded $2500 on it in Jan 06 and have still got a couple hundred $s on there. Use it for meals mainly and to pay for any larger souvies we might buy :)

Apart from that, we take a little bit of cash to pay for drinks and snacks and a credit card for emergencies.

Hi. With the Americal Express TC card, how easy is it to keep an eye on what you have left.

We use the Amex travellers cheque card and take a small amount of cash. With the Amex card we can keep an eye on our spending and load it up easily if we need to. We also take a credit card just in case we need it. We find it easy to know how much is left on our Amex card as we always keep a note of how much we spand each day, plus we take our laptop with us when we travel anyway so we can check our balance on line.

Thanks for the replies. These Americal Express TC cards sound good, do they charge you for taking one out and what is the exchange rate like? It must be alot easier than having a purse full of cash. Do most places accept them?

We take some dollars with us (for toll roads, etc) and travellor's cheques to obtain more cash (for stalls, car parking, etc) and use the credit card for everything else. We already have the cash saved up to use on the credit card so basically just really use it as a debit card if you know what I mean.

We take cash, travellers cheques and a Nationwide CC! :goodvibes

I have cash for on arrival for tolls and stuff, travellers cheques for general spending and the CC for big stuff!!

Havn't used travellers cheques for years. We much prefer to use our Nationwide gold card because not only do you get the benefit of not paving to pay for the stirling to dollar change you also get the benefit of whatever the business rate is at the time you use your card ;)
We do take $'s in cash as well to cover things like tips, carts etc. :)

nationwide cc and nationwide debit card.get the better bank rate on both and if you use debit card at publix no atm fee.if using debit at disney atm draw out max available as think $5.00 fee.but still works out better rate.and a bit of cash too start us off

I usually take cash and Sterling TCs abroad, but since I have read it is so easy to cash Dollar TCs, plus with the great exchange rate right now, im just going to take $600 cash - $500 deposit at the airport for the hire car (I dont have a CC as I despise them to be honest) and $100 to get us started, the TCs and leave some money on my debit card for emergencies (assuming I can use it over there  )
