Hi -

I called DVC/DVD to ask about a trip I plan to book at the end of this month. I do not have enough points for the entire (extended) vacation we have planned - I am short only by a few points.

The rep at MS suggested doing a cash reservation for the first night. She said that they offer DVC members discounts on cash reservations. Would this be the same thing as a public discount or are these something separate for DVC members?

Reason I ask..... 11 months out, general public codes are not available. By the time they are released, I fully expect that the AKV will be completely booked up.

When available, the cash discount is 25% off rack rates. This is only at DVC resorts and the discount is not always available.

If they have the discounted room available now through MS, I would go ahead and book it. Then, if the general public discounts come out in the future and are available for a better rate, you can decide if you want to cancel the cash night through DVC ( I think you can cancel the cash nights up to 5 days before arrival without penalty) and rebook that night through CRO. But at least you would have the peace of mind knowing you had all the days you wanted when you book next month. Also, I believe, if booked through MS they can link your points and cash reservations so that you would not have to change rooms as long as they are the same room type. If booked through CRO, however, I think you can request not to change rooms, but I do not think it is guaranteed. Happy planning!

I think you can buy one time use points for $15 pp from DVC.

I thought about that, but I need to be able to do it 11 months out. :sad1:

Sad thing is, it is so few points - I hate to pay cash for 1 night when I think about it that way. Maybe I should scratch the additional night altogether. :confused3

Is it completely out of the question to borrow the points from next year?
I would feel the same way you do about paying when I'm only 2 points short.
I'll be in a similar situation next month and I'm really not sure what I'll end up doing.

For this trip, we will be using all of our 2010, 2011 and 2012 AKV points. I had a friend xfer some points to me as well. We are taking a long trip and booking serveral rooms for a family vacation. Our entire stay will be short by 4 points. As we are booking 2BDR Savanna Views, I really believe it is essential to call 11 months out. Also, Dad will be purchasing our airfare before we hit the 7-month mark, so it will be too late to add a day on in the event there is something available where I can buy those points for $15 each. :( And, if that were possible, I would just use my BLT points, but I have to wait until the 7-month mark to use those as well - my use years are the same for both contracts. :(

Could you book the first night with a cash discount now and then at 7 months if it is available switch over to points using your BLT points if a room is available? I am just asking as I have never tried to do it and don't know if this is possible.
