Casey's Buns

I ate at Casey's twice last week--Monday and Saturday. Both days were fake wheat buns. By that I mean they were still enriched flour bread. The second time I asked and was told that they keep switching back and forth. The young man went on to say that he thought they were trying to make the hot dogs healthy and then he just cracked up laughing. They taste fine, but the buns don't hold together very well and they are pretty thin. Not near as much bread as the regular old white ones.

They aren't going to be much (if any) healthier, and they don't taste as good. I'm not sure I understand the upside. If they aren't whole wheat, they likely have very little nutrition.

Well, hopefully we'll be there on a day they have white bread.

DH's friend said they had the cheese sauce on the bar. I can't remember if it was on the bar at Casey's in June or not. I know I had to ask for it and pay extra for it at both, Pecos Bill's and Cosmic Ray's. PB's charged me $.50 and CR's charged me $1.00...go figure.

I guess if it is a hard, dry bun, we can soak it in cheese!

Maybe an answer to the enhanced question that was posed earlier.

I know the term enhanced bread left us king of perplexed. I was able to find this on google. How valid it is towards our discussion I am unsure, who knows what brand name bread Disney is using? :rotfl:

Mrs Baird’s Introduces Whole Grain White Bread
New product combines nutritious and delicious
Fort Worth, TX--(HISPANIC PR WIRE)--March 29, 2006--A new product from Mrs Baird’s Bakeries answers
the age-old problem of serving your family the most nutritious food versus the things they really want. Mrs Baird’s Whole Grain White Bread brings the goodness of whole grains to a product that looks and tastes like the
company’s legendary white bread. The new bread is a good source of whole grains, providing 8.5 grams per serving, fiber and folic acid and an excellent source of calcium and vitamin D. It contains no trans fats, artificial
colors or flavors.

“While many children and adults like traditional whole wheat bread, others prefer the consistency and taste of white bread. This new product provides the best of both worlds and keeps with America’s eating trends,” said
Joan Camerlingo, Mrs Baird’s brand manager. “Mrs Baird’s Whole Grain White is a great tasting white bread with added soft grains for enhanced nutritional value that the whole family will love. As a parent, I can feel good
about giving my children a product that contains whole grains, while at the same time serving them nutritious food that they enjoy eating. This is truly a win-win product,” she added.

While the recently released Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommend most adults consume six ounce servings of grains a day, with at least half of those servings whole grains, studies show 40 percent of Americans
consume no whole grains. Whole grain products are high in fiber and provide important vitamins and minerals. Studies show whole grains can reduce the risk of diabetes, heart disease and some cancers.

More information about Mrs Baird’s full line of products can be found on the Mrs Baird’s website at http://www.MrsBairds.com.
Mrs Baird's Bread is a subsidiary of Bimbo Bakeries USA and is the U.S. Division of Mexico's Group Bimbo, one
of the world's largest baking companies.

I mean if a press release from the distributing company says it's healthy, who are we to argue ;)

The resorts all have the wheat/white hybrid as well. It's really not that bad. At least it wasn't for us.

And if you read it on the DIS, hear it on radio, or see it on TV it has to be true also.......right???
:lmao::rotfl2::lmao::rotfl2::lmao:

I do find it odd that WDW would be switching back and forth between white of wheat buns though. Maybe they are getting a deal from the distributor by accepting whatever they have available.

:thumbsup2

Everyone has different upsides. I personally dislike gooey white bread. So thinner, 'wheat' bread would be perfect for me.

Sorry for the double post....

I think Disney is taking the fun out of vacation for a lot of people.

The only person who can take the fun out of your vacation is you. Disney changing their bread over to wheat certainly won't ruin anybody's vacation (or at least I'd hope not).

I think everyone is making a much bigger deal out of this than it has to be. As someone already said, Disney hasn't been getting a lot of complaints about it.

I know this board, if they changed their buns back to white, we'd have people complaining about how un-healthy the food is.

No, I'm not taking the fun out of my vacation. I will just choose not to eat there, which will be a disappointment. We look forward to a hot dog from Casey's all year. If we can't have it...because we don't like to eat hard bread...then yes, it does take some of the fun out of the vacation.

White bread or wheat bread, I'm still going to have a blast. Will it make me think twice about the DP? Absolutely! If I can't use my lunch credits and get what I want, why buy the DP?

At the very least, they could offer a choice.

I absolutely don't think people are overreacting to this change. This is a tradition for a lot of people.

Well, it depends on whether you like wheat bread or not. I HATE wheat bread. When I first got a wheat bun at Electric Umbrella, I had no warning. It was a total surprise. If I had known, I wouldn't have bought it. I actually ate the burger and left the bun. I was happy to get a white bun at the Commissary at the Studios. If they go to all wheat buns, I will never be able to get a sandwich on a bun. That will greatly reduce my dining choices, which will take a lot of the fun out of eating at Disney. I guess I'll be eating a lot more chicken tenders!

Well add me to the list of "wheat bun" haters. If I'm already eating a nitrate filled tube-steak, I want my refined sugar white bun to go with it!

Here's been my issue with the wheat vs. white. Direct from Disney's website:

"Casey's Corner - Bite into a tasty morsel of Americana when you sample these deliciously classic hot dogs, French fries and beverages. They're a home run every time!"

And from the DIS:

"This Main Street icon pays homage to the National Pastime of Baseball."

Casey's is a ballpark-themed quick service restaurant. Now here's a list of ballparks I've been to, and see which item is out of place:

Angel Stadium, Anaheim, CA - white bun
Busch Stadium (old), St. Louis, MO - white bun
Casey's Corner, WDW, FL - wheat bun?
Champion Window Field, Florence, KY - white bun
C.O. Brown Stadium, Battle Creek, MI - white bun
Comerica Park, Detroit, MI - white bun
Comiskey Park (old), Chicago, IL - white bun
Comiskey Park (new), Chicago, IL - white bun
Covelski Stadium, South Bend, IN - white bun
Dodger Stadium, Los Angeles, CA - "Dodger Dog", white bun
Fifth-Third Field, Dayton, OH - white bun
Great American Ball Park - Cincinnati, OH - white bun
Jacobs Field, Cleveland, OH - white bun
Louisville Slugger Field, Louisville, KY - white bun
Miller Park, Milwaukee, WI - white bun
Oldsmobile Park, Lansing, MI - white bun
PNC Park, Pittsburgh, PA - white bun
Petco Field, San Diego, CA - white bun
Riverfront Stadium, Cincinnati, OH - white bun
Rogers Centre, Toronto, ON - white bun
Stryker Field, Kalamazoo, MI - white bun
Tiger Stadium, Detroit, MI - white bun
Victory Field, Indianapolis, IN - white bun
Wrigley Field, Chicago, IL - white bun

And, I'm just assuming that when we go out east in June, that our "Fenway Franks", and dogs at Yankee and Shea Stadiums will also come on white buns.

You're darn tootin' they will!

BTW - I'm not buying for one minute that WDW is using "wheat" buns because of a "health" factor. It all comes down to dollars & cents - it MUST be more cost-effective for them to have made this switch. I agree with PPs - if you're not happy with getting a "wheat" roll for your hot dog or hamburger, I would take it right back up to the counter and ask for something else. You would send back a meal you weren't happy with at a TS, wouldn't you? Let the CMs at these cs restaurants see their customers' dissatisfaction with what they are serving - I'm sure that would have a greater impact than just shooting off an email.

That's it, exactly - I truly couldn't taste a difference under all that chili-cheese, but the stupid bun was flimsy and crumbled apart.

:thumbsup2 I'm not a baseball fan - never been to a game - but this is close to my beef (:lmao: ) with the situation, too... Casey's is supposed to take us back to the hey-day of the hot dog. Fair/carnival/baseball food. Anyone grow up with Nathan's? Ted's? Sabrett's? All served on gooey white buns. ::yes::

Is it possible that these wheat buns are less expensive? For Disney of course...not for us.

FWIW, I don't care about the bun. White/wheat...it's all good.

DH and I ate a snack at Casey's yesterday. No before I get started, I will confess to being a whole grain junky. So we got our hot dogs and went to chow down, opened the package and saw the hybrid roll. I totally forgot about this thread until then and started laughing. DH looked at me like  so I had to explain. Anyway, this is no where near a wheat roll. I would say it's more like a white roll with a little bit of wheat thrown in. I thought it was tasty, but nothing like what I expected given some of the posts on here.

Believe me, these are still unhealthy. Enjoy.

Thank you for your on-site update! We will be having lunch here two weeks from today and I've said in other "great bun debate" threads that so long as the bun tastes fine I don't care how it's made.

I am so glad to hear (another) first hand account on how the evil new buns aren't too evil. It makes me feel better about trying them for myself in two weeks. :goodvibes

One more thing, neither of our buns fell apart. And If you don't want the french fries or apples, you can still get JUST a hot dog. It was around $4.
