Casey Anthony Trial Thread #3

Ashton shaking his head. This ought to be a good cross, straightening Baez out.

So I am guessing the the defense picked witnesses that :
A: Are older and are at the end of their career so they don't care about how they come off and
B: Young people who are wanting to further careers and/or new to testifying
so that he can blame them at the end of the trial when it doesn't go his way.

I think he is incompetent and he is being a jerk to HIS witness, Marcus Weiss

"A" would certainly be Jane Bock. What a nightmare she was on the stand.

Have ANY of the 'defense witnesses' actually helped the defense yet? :confused3 :rotfl:
No wonder this guy sounds so smart! He's on the prosecution's "side"; Baez just challenging (or trying to) his findings.
I think this is the guy who drew the "smell" out of the car and put it in the cans when Vass was out of town. And tested for chloroform...can't get a quantitative result...just qualitative. I think.

i've been on the phone and up and down through this witness i don't know whats happening

Marcus Wise research scientist at Oakridge--analytical chemist--has worked for Oakridge for 27 years--First time he's ever testified in court---accepted as expert witness

JB talks about difference between research labs and forensic labs

JB youre not used to working with evidence samples--

JB different protocols between labs---JA objects

JB youre aware of different types of labs and their practices--yes

JB are you aware they have more rigid standards----not aware

JB youre not concerned with what must be done within each case---we do routine parts of our job

JB you just do..dont have to fill out reports--No

JB you dont have quality control--In these cases we are not running a routine procedure

JB any protocols to avoid contamination--we run blank standards to make sure theres no contamination on GCMS

JB no quality control measures to prevent contamination before evidence reaches an instrument---Wise asks him to clarify like 5x

JB aware of any contamination at your lab---no

JB your focus is to expand boundaries of science--yes

JB anything in your lab to alert you to contamination--No

JB you were given items to test--yes

JB how were you asked to test the items--asked to determine what was in it

JB who asked---Arpad Vass asked

JB where did you get items---from his office

JB was the door open---Locked I had key

JB where were they in the office---on desk or file cabinet I dont know

JB then you just took them to your office--yes

JB when asked to do these things did you tell Vass--JA object

JB the items you were asked to test did you tell Vass that a quantitative result would mean nothing in this case---he asked me to do a qualitative analysis we didnt discuss quantitative

JB (talking about peaks on report) tell us what it shows---shows us peaks of what is in item and height of peaks tells us whats in the item

JB you told Vass a quantitative would do no good---yes

JB was a quantitative analysis done on the levels of the chloroform--No

JB why would it have been useless---it evaporates easily so the concentration decreases over a period of time minutes hours days...the rate it decreases depends on different factors...exposure to air etc

JB so a closed trunk would slow down volatily--No...if we made a quantitative analysis of sample we would have come up with a # of the amount on carpet a small piece of the puzzle the amount would be lower than what was originally there..amount originally could have been up to 1000x greater...we cant back calculate to when it was first exposed

JB is the reason you didnt check is the history--would have to know when deposited, temperature,

JB because of so many unknows you didnt get amount--No way to many factors because it cant be related back to what was originally there

JB when you tested the air samples--they only last a few days

JB you took the carpet put it in a tevlar bag--originally got metal can had samples...took sample with inserted syringe and put into GCMS

JB you heated sample--told Vass there was chloroform and we need to amplify sample put in bag then into incubator for 2 days then a sample of the bag air was analyzed by GCMS and chloroform was largest peak

JB GCMS highly sensitive--Yes down to a certain concentration level

JB standards of chloroform purchased for this case--Yes but quantitative would be useless

Jb what do you use standards for--we look for peaks then take peak and examine the particular compound for tentative identification....we then buy a clean sample to see if it matches the tentative identification

JB standard wasnt used to determine how much chloroform was on samples--It was not intended to do that

Jb do you recognize those notes...are they what you were doing in the lab--yes

JB you say the blank was reasonably clean--yes

JB you dont have standard protocols--no

JB very large benzine peak from trip blank tells you what--Benzine contamination

JB you dont know how it got there do you--No

Taking a stretch break

Baez is trying to impeach Dr Vass's results.

This Wise/Weiss guy is saying that if they had gotten the carpet sample earlier, it may have had hundreds of times more chloroform. That's why quantitative analysis of the chloroform at that date (of testing) would have been low, and meaningless because it was just a snapshot of chloroform at that date. It was present tho. Bad for the defense.

This is ridiculous!! This guy works with Vass!? HB expects him to refute Dr. Vass? HoseA is the most confounding person... i swear!

Perhaps the benzene contamination is HoseA's point?

Glad JBP just called for that break, I just made meatloaf and threw it into the oven during that time. LOL

I would love a cam on the states table

I've said all along that I would much rather have a camera on Cheney Mason so I can see how he reacts when Baez talks instead of seeing Fake Casey the entire time.

They should do a side by side for each of them

They should do a side by side for each of them
We need Brady Bunch cams...the witness in the middle, surrounded by Casey/Simms (they get one picture), Mason, Baez, Ashton, George, Burdick, Perry, and oh, I don't know, the football coach who works the equipment?

Doesn't this witness sound a little Eeyore-ish when he speaks? :)
