Cartoon characters

Hello!
Maybe it was yesterday's turkey or way too much shopping today, but I'm finding myself in a bit of a pickle trying to help out my 11 year old with his homework..... I'd like to pick your brains for a moment.... He's looking to find cartoon characters that represent important causes . Smokey the bear is all that comes to my mind right now, can you help????? Thanks!

There was a cartoon guy on a commercial in the 70's. He fought littering. His tag line was "That's where you belong. In the waste can!!"
I can't think of his name.

How about Captain Planet and the Planeteers? This was an anti-pollution cartoon series produced by TBS back in (I think) the 1980s. The super-villain would usually have a plan that created more pollution, and the Planeteers, a group of multi-cultural teenagers, would summon Captain Planet to solve it. At the end, they'd include a lecture to the audience, and Captain Planet would say, "The power is yours." Very well meaning, but very heavy handed.

Oh and Captain Planet was awesome - I used to watch it before school every day - I always liked the combining of the rings with the powers in them
