A friend recently suggested getting a lightweight Cosco convertible carseat for our upcoming trip where DS will be about 28 months at the time. Has anyone done that? Pros/Cons?

We brought our own carseat on the plane with ODS. It's the safest option for them, but we also needed it for the car rental. If you need a seat while you are there, it's a good option. The cost of renting and the general unknown about the quality of the seat (is it expired, has it been in any accidents, etc.) usually make it ideal to just bring your own whether it's a cheap one you plan to dispose of or your usual seat.

When our twins went we didn't need one for a car so we rented a CARES harness instead. For the two of them it was only around $25.

We had 2 carseats on a plane last year. Was a pain to carry them through the airport but very well worth the kids' safety, comfort and familiarity. Just make sure it's approved for use on aircraft.

I had a cheap one when my son was little, but only if I needed it on the other side. It was MUCH easier traveling with that instead of his bulky Britax.

If we didn't need the carseat on the other end, I, too, used a CARES harness. Borrowed from a friend the first time but liked it so much I bought one for us!! The think I like about the CARES (or just the seatbelt) vs a carseat, is that the tray table can't be used with a carseat (at least it couldn't with my son) AND it was much easier for him to kick the back of the seat in front of him in the carseat (and since he couldn't have anything on the tray, guess how he entertained himself?!?!).

We use the Eddie Bauer x65. You can get it at Target for $99 on sale. We have used it 3 years in a row. It it light weight, so easy to carry through airport and fits perfectly into the seat. It is great because my DS is familiar with being in a car seat and we use it for the rental car.

We used a scenera next on a trip we took in September and it was great! We used it on the plane and in the rental car. It was easy to install and we still use it for Grandma's car!
