We are flying Delta out of Flint, Michigan in September. The carryon I'd love to use is ok on the length, the height, but the width is about 1" too big. DH is already having a cow about this thinking we are going to be embarrased when they try to make us pay extra. I'm thinking they are only going to check it exactally if its obviousy over sized. Think this will be much of a big deal?

depends if delta measures some airlines do. we gave up and check it what is another $25 after paying for the trip and not have to deal with it as it goes on to ME anyhow and straight to resort so is much easier. IMO

Is it too big for the overhead or for under the seat in front of you? If it the overhead you may not be able to close the door and then it will have to be checked. If its under the seat you have to put it in the overhead assuming there is room

If on that day the gate agent decides to measure the bags then you could be out of luck.

You are most likely going to be just fine. My LLBean rolling duffle is exactly the right measurement for carryon baggage. It fits perfectly, wheels in, in almost all overhead bins. The only bins it won't fit in are on the planes with 3 and 2 seat configurations. Then, I just use the bins above the row of 3.

I have watched passengers struggle with their bags....these bags are very obviously oversized...the FAs have never said anything. One girl had to stand up on the seat in order to forcibly shove her way to large bag in. And it was actually hysterical watching her try to get it out when she wanted to get off. The really funny thing??? There were two guys sitting in front of me. One guy turned to his friend and said..'Do you think we should give her a hand?', to which his friend replied...'He** no. She brought on a bag that is way to big....let her figure it out.' I stuck my hand through the seats and gave them a thumbs up!!!
I mean seriously....this girl knew the bag was too big. She had to put it in sideways to begin with, and when she did get it in the bin, it took up almost the entire bin. I was actually surprised no one stopped her at the gate.
And here I would sit...obsessing over my perfectly sized bag!!!!

I've seen people drag on huge carryons and get away with it. Last year a girl's bag was so stuffed it would not fit into the overhead opening. She stood in the aisle removing jeans and finally got it in the overhead with the help of 2 guys. It was ridiculous, she was holding up boarding. But they didn't do anything.

These are my experiences as well. I've agonized over the sizing of my carry ons for years, measuring and re-measuring (don't always take the same bag) and then when we fly, there are passengers boarding with HUGE duffles, etc. None of the FAs bat an eye, they act like nothing is going on - I've even seen a couple of them HELP the passenger cram the things into the overhead!:confused3

The FAs often rearrange larger bags in the overheads to fit sideways if the doors won't close, or put a pillow under the bag so the wheels will allow the door to close. I've never seen them call anyone out and insist the bag be checked.

For what it's worth, I haven't flown Delta.

My experience with Delta: used the same roll aboard many, many times to many different places.

One day at FLL went through as usual. Flight cancelled, spent the night in a hotel, went through the next day with same bag and was stopped. Told to put my roll aboard in the little "Will your bag fit?" set up they had at security. When I couldn't get it all the way in, I was sent back to check it. All the way back - to ticketing.

So it depends. I got through for years and then one day I didn't. I've since discarded that bag and bought an even smaller one! Good luck.

is the carry on a "squishable" piece of luggage like a duffle or tote bag?? or a hard case "its staying this size no matter how hard you try to close the over head door" the size requirement is so that it fits in the over head compartment or under your seat.. so and 1" is most likely fine i have never had TSA measure my luggage..

Definantly squshable. That's where I think my one extra inch might be ok. If I wrapped it in duct tape to reduce that inch, would that look too tacky? Hhahaha!

When I've seen people with too large bags holding up boarding, I have heard the flight attendants comment "the 'gate attendants' should have stopped them."

I wouldn't do anything to call attention to it.

If they question it, maybe pack a roll of tape in the carry on and "strap it down" if necessary. But if you can squash it tighter, they're probably not going to give you a hard time.

Usually (unless they're being picky that day) the bags I see being "refused" are the hard top ones that just can't be "wiggled" into place.

Sometimes the enforcement of carry on size is arbitrary and inconsistent. For example, I have a carry on that I have used for years. When I purchased it, it was labeled as consistent with carry on standards. My son and husband also have carry ons that are labeled as consistent with standards, and if you stand the bags up against each other, mine is actually smaller than theirs. This past March, when we traveled to Orlando, we took our usual carry on bags. On the trip to Orlando, no problem. Got right on the plane without a hassle. On the way home, however, the gate agent in Orlando made us check our carry ons because they were too big:confused3. Since we had things like cameras and computers and ipods and ipads in our carry ons, we had to take them out, and, actually, once I removed my camera bag and purse, my carry on was empty! And both the camera bag and purse fit on the floor under the seat in front of me!
I can't imagine where I could actually buy a carry on that fits the specifications that the gate agent quoted. Perhaps if I could find a child's suitcase, that might work. But, in any case, after previous experiences of this type, I usually pack my carry on as if they are going to arbitrarily decide it is to big. I have a DSLR, and it's bag nearly completely fills the carry on I use. Last trip, I was able to stuff the Ipad inside the camera bag to take it onto the plane. But, there is no way I am going to check the camera bag.

And I further note that on this particular flight, there was actually loads of room in the overhead compartment, probably because they were making everybody check their carry on bags.
