I plan on taking a carry on bag and a boarding bag onto the plane with me. If I were to put my fanny pack into my boarding bag would that still count as 2 items or would they consider it 3 items?

I'm not familiar with the term "boarding bag". I know most airlines say you are limited to one carryon and a smaller personal item, e.g. a purse or laptop bag. Is that what you are referring to as a "boarding bag"?

You can always put one bag inside another and it would count as one bag instead of two. When traveling with my DD was younger, I would often pack a smaller bag with stuff we would need during the flight and put it inside my rolling carryon. When we got on the flight, before I put the carryon in the overhead bin, I'd pull out the smaller bag and we'd be set with everything we needed during the flight.

Yes, my boarding bag is like a laptop bag and will fit under the seat. I should have plenty of room to put my fanny pack in there because my DD has her own bag to put her games and stuff in.

They can only legitimately count the actual visible bags. You could conceivably have six bags nested inside each other (with, ultimately, a change of underwear and your 3-1-1 bag being all that fits ), and it would count as one bag.

Two items. How would anyone know that this bag was inside? It's the actual physical number of bags you carry which counts.

Ok, be warned that I'm going to show my "never flown before" ignorance LOL

When you go through security don't they look in the bags that you are bringing on the flight or do they just rely on the x-ray machine?

I know I have to pull my laptop out. I know we each get to have a quart sized bag with 3 oz liquids. Anything bigger goes in the checked bag. I'm going to have another plastic bag to put my prescription meds in. I have to do some more reading on the TSA web site to become more familiar with the procedures and rules. Of course, I'm going to need to contact them ahead of time because I'm going to be traveling with my scooter so will need extra security check for that and then have it gate checked before getting on the plane.

I have 2 different sized carry ons and was thinking of maybe nesting the 2 in case I need an extra bag on the way home.

They only physically look/search if they see something on the x-ray they can't ID or if it looks suspicious or weird.

Before you had to pay for checked bags I used to regularly put an empty suitcase inside a bigger case for the way home.

Remember your DD is allowed a carry on and a personal item also. My kids always bring a backpack as their personal. it fits under the seat and you can put a bunch in them.

while talking to TSA about scooter, find out if you will have to go thru the special check line. if so find out if you daughter can come with you. that was the hard part for me going on trips with daughter and grandsons. she had to go thru a different area because she could not go thru regular line that i had to take boys thru. something else to check.

I'm so glad you brought this up. I would feel very uncomfortable having my daughter go thru security alone. Yes, she is 15 and I'm trying to get her to take on more adult like responsibilities in life, but since neither of us have flown before and there is no other adult along I would have to draw the line here.
I'll be sure to mention this when I call. I doubt they would make someone underage go thru security without an accompanying adult, but I guess you never know with the way the world is now.

Since it is just the two of you traveling I highly doubt you will be separated but if it were me I would prepare for the possiblity.

The minimum age to fly alone is 12 so by the time they reach 15 lots of kids are flying alone. The TSA would expect her to be able to handle this alone..... but again lets hope they let her accompany you. My dd's friend has made over a dozen trips alone and she just turned fourteen.

Make sure you each have your own 3-1-1 bag and be organizied. Put all your metal's - jewlry, watch etc in a zipock and put it into your carryon along with your belt before you even go to security. Shoes that are easily to slip on and off etc.

Have your dd read through the restrictions on the TSA page so she also understands the procedure. IIRC there is a video as well.

Relax, don't panic or rush but just calmly follow the instructions and get through it !

It truly isn't a big deal for your DD to walk thru security on her own.

Don't expect any special accommodation for this unless she is special needs because there is no reason she can't walk thru a scanner and follow instructions, 5 yr olds and younger do it every day. Just follow the instructions.

So, maybe I am invisioning this all wrong in my head. I'm sure she can put her things up for screening, walk through a scanner and collect her belongings again without me. I do not know where to tell her to go when she is finished. Would these different security areas be visible to each other? If I can see her or know where she'll end up I'll be fine. I just don't want her or I getting upset about finding each other when we are done. I wonder if they can just take my scooter to be inspected elsewhere. I can certainly walk far enough to go through the regular security line as well. I think I'll ask them that when I call.
I never even thought about children flying alone...but I really don't care how many people send their child alone on an airplane or at what age, that is their choice to make, not one I would make for my child. I don't think I'm overly protective but I am very cautious about putting my daughter in uncomfortable situations without being able to describe what to expect to her. I've never been past the 1st floor of our airport, I have no clue what the set up is on the 2nd floor for security, services or gates.
I was hoping to be able to grab some breakfast and drinks once we get past security but the SYR airport website leaves alot to be desired, basically it sucks LOL....so I don't even know what the heck is up there.

Yes, you will be in sight of each other at all times. I've never seen an airport security system that totally separates people from each other to the point they don't come out in the same area -- you just meet up where you pick up your scanned carry-ons. Security doesn't care how many carry-ons you have; it's the airline that will ask you to consolidate your bags before you reach the gate. When we flew Southwest a week ago they specifically asked people with more than two carry-ons to put the smaller carry-ons (such as a purse) inside another bag.

When we flew with DMIL and her wheelchair, both DH and I accompanied her through security.

She will be fine and so will you -if you are spearated just tell her to wait for you just after security before proceeding any further. Does she have a cellphone? If so she can just text you where she is if she finishes first and vise versa. In most airports she will probably be able to see you and you her but I can't guarantee that having never flown from SYR. There is usually an area with benches so folks can put their shoes back on and re-pack their carry on bags. This would be the best place for you to wait for each other.

As I said in my pp - It really doesn't matter what we, (you and I) feel comfortable with - the fact is that the TSA sees many minors flying alone so it won't be unusual for them. I did not call you protective and IMHO its better to know the facts ahead of time than to be surprised. I fly at least once a month and often my dd's and I are directed into a different screener - we just meet at the end.

Since it is just the 2 of you the likely hood of them separating you is very small, still what is wrong for preparing for that possibility just in case?

Preparation is a good thing I just feel like I can't fully prepare for this because I've never done it before. I hate change, can ya tell? LOL

I will tell her to gather her things and get her shoes on and just wait there for me if they take me through a different line or area. And yes, she does have a cell phone just in case.

And when it's all said and done and I'm back home I am hoping that I hear the following phrase come from my mouth..
"I will never drive to FL again, flying is sooo much easier".
