**Edited to fix link**

DH and I are traveling to MCO on July 17, and I'm so excited that I've already pulled out the luggage! Anyways, we are flying Delta, and I'm wondering about the Carry On size. I looked on their website and got the measurements... the bag I want to take has slightly differently measurements than those they give, . The bag is "soft", and I will not pack it so tightly that it will not move... do you think this will be a problem?

http://www.llbean.com/webapp/wcs/st...ategory=5236&cat4=3153&shop_method=pp&feat=ln is the bag I have, in size extra large. Dimensions are: 17"H x 19"W x 10". Delta's "approximate" dimensions are 22"x14"x9". DH and I measured my actual bag, and we don't think it's as large as the measurements provided by the site.

Okay, so all this being said, how picky are the carry on's? I know some folks carry those mini suitcases, so I was just wondering if I should just put this bag back in the closet and try again, or go ahead and pack it....

Another question, I saw on Delta's site where the weight limit for a carry on is 40lbs. I would like to pack some extra bottles of water and sodas... will that be a problem?

I can't open the link, so can't tell you specifically about your particular bag. Basically, you have to be able to stow your bag either underneath the seat that is in front of you, and if you have a middle seat there is less room under there, or in the above compartments. The size for carryons is really pretty decent sized. As far as bringing water and such, I don't think I would bring a supply for my stay in WDW with me as carryon, but a few bottles won't be a problem. You can always use a grocery delivery service to deliver anything you might want.
Just thought of something..usually LLBean and Land's End let you know if a certain piece of luggage is suitable for use as a carryon.

IMHO - Relax, you will have one of the smallest carry on's on the aircraft! :thumbsup2
You can simply put it in the overhead bin or under the seat in front of you. Then take your seat and watch as the people towing those near elephant sized roller bags attempt to lift nearly a ton and cram it into the overhead bin!! :woohoo:
The show can be quite amusing! :rotfl2:

A bag measuring 17"H x 19"W x 10 is fine for a carry on. Believe me, I have seen people lugging far larger bags on board without a word being said by flight attendants.

Another question, I saw on Delta's site where the weight limit for a carry on is 40lb

I have never seen an airline weigh carry on luggage. Ever. It's possible that it has happened, but if it does. it must be extremely rare.

The main purpose for the weight limit on carry-ons is safety. Remember, you have to either put your carry-on under the seat in front of you, or hoist it up into the overhead bin.

Hoisting a 40lb bag into the overhead bin is not as easy as it sounds in the confined space of an airplane cabin, particularly when you remember that there may be people in the seats under that bin. You don't want to drop a 40lb bag onto somebody's head!

The scariest part is getting the bag out when you land. Stuff in those compartments shifts around during flight. Even if you have a totally smooth flight, the bags will move around due to the angle changes during takeoff and landing, and when the plane makes a turn. When you pop the bins open, stuff sometimes falls out, and if a 40lb bag of water and soda falls out onto your foot, or onto somebody's head, you'll be in a world of trouble.

I recommend not bringing more than a few drinks with you. You can always make some sort of arrangement to get water or soda once you get to WDW; there are stores close by that carry cases of drinks, and even places that you can fax an order to that will deliver to your resort room.

I've read that it's the sum total of the bag's dimensions (height + length + width) that the airlines are concerned about. Your bag is actually an inch less than Delta's requirements. It can't be too bulky to fit into the overhead bin, so you're wise to not stuff the outer pockets full.

I've been on flights (would have beein UA, Delta, AA, or SWA) that have paid attention to the size of carry on luggage. They just make people check it at the gate if there isn't room onboard.

We usually check our bags that are carry-on size, so they get weighed when we check in. Even when heavy (to me), the weight is ~ 32 lbs, so I can't IMAGINE what a 40 or 50 lb bag would feel like. It would be dangerous for me to try to lift anything heavier than that into an overhead bin, and I'd never expect anyone else to risk hurting themselves or a passenger below by assisting me.

Thanks for all the responses! After I posted this message yestersday, I decided to forget the worrying and just use another bag. The "new" bag I chose doesn't zip shut though, so now I've gone back to my original LL Bean Bag (after your positive responses that it would be okay, and also about the idea of storing my zipper-less bag in the overhead areas and all my stuff flying everywhere during the flight!) We are only checking 3 bags (as opposed to the four allowed) so checking *would* be an option, except that I'm diabetic and I really need my supplies on board with me. However, my small mesh backpack (to carrying around at the parks) is packed empty inside my carry on, so worse case scenario is that I pull my diabetic supplies, put them in the mesh backpack and carry that on, and check my original bag. This sounds okay to me, how about you all?
