Carry-On Luggage on a "Puddle Jumper"

I use the eBags TLS Motherlode Weekender Junior for the medical items I carry-on. For this reason it counts as an "extra" carry-on and not against the normal 1 carry-on/1 personal item limit. I therefore cannot speak to whether it would be accepted as a personal item.

But with respect to your question about it fitting in the overhead bin: YES, it can. As long as it is not stuffed or expanded. About 6-7" sounds about right and will probably give some space. I cinched mine down well with the straps for that purpose. It has to go in sideways, not like it would go into a normal overhead bin. And it needs to have some "mushing" room on all sides and the top. And rememebr to check where all the straps have put themselves and make sure they are in the bin too :-)

This document is a useful reference for the underseat size on the various Delta planes. It is referencing pet carriers, but gives the underseat dimensions :-) http://www.flygob.com/library/documents/delta_underseat.pdf

Normally, we pack (2) rolling carry-ons for the 4 of us. In those, we pack our dry foods, dishware, umbrellas, ponchos, medicines, extra shoes, and anything else we won't need access to during the flight. Then, we each have the MotherLodes so those get packed with everything else for the trip. That means ALL of our clothes and toiletries, plus everything we would use on the plane like headphones, laptops, iPad, phone, and even our travel pillows. For this trip, we will EACH have a rolling carry-on (3 total) which means all of our clothes, shoes and toiletries can get packed into those. I am ordering paper plates/bowls and I'm also not going to just add the dry foods to our grocery order instead of packing them so we won't have those to worry about. That means that the backpacks will be relatively empty. We will only need to put the stuff we will need on the plane, plus maybe a small packing cube or jacket, but they definitely will not be stuffed. The more I look at them (sitting here empty), the more I think that they don't look any larger than my "boarding bag" which is what I dug out as an alternative. They are very thin when they are empty and I know we won't have enough stuff to stuff them full.

They are relatively small, soft and mushable to a point. When I first flew the Delta CRJ I asked at the gate [I had a LOT of time for my connection] about my backpack... the gate attendant eyeballed it and said it would be fine and not to worry. Any hard-sided bags they were making people gate check.

:worship::thanks: This information is SO helpful! Now that I have read someone's first-hand experience with the SAME bag on the SAME size plane, I feel more confident about which luggage to bring along. My next question is, should I spring for the Delta Comfort+ upgrade? I was already seriously contemplating it, just so we wouldn't have to sit near the back of the plane (row 13 out of 18) but it would also give us dedicated overhead bin space and priority boarding.

I book the upgrade so I have the assigned seat not in the back of the plane

I’m case my connection is shortened, I don’t have to rush as my seat is further up in the plane

A few days ago I purchased the upgrade on our United flight so we have Economy Plus. Sounds like we are having the same trip, pretty much. I still am trying to figure out my carry on for the CRJ-200 I will be on.

I have this bag that I rarely use:https://www.ebags.com/product/delsey/quilted-rolling-overnighter/256557?productid=10492290

Does that look a good option?

The very first review said it does not fit under the window or aisle seats on SWA planes. It says the width is 14.5" and the SWA seats are only 14" so that would be correct that it probably is too wide for those non-middle seats. I'm not a fan of the "quilted" style bags either...not sure why, it's just not my style. It looks very functional, though, but if it doesn't fit, it won't help me.

We always either purchase initially or upgrade if available to the "plus" seats with extra legroom [whatever they are called on thee airline wwe are flying on]. IME totally worth it just for the extra legroom.

One of the review stated it would not fit under the seat on a window our aisle on a SWA flight. Given the fact that the plane you are on is only 2 seat configuration and much smaller it more than likely will not fit. Another person said it would not fit under the seat on a Delta or American Airlines flight.
