I have a large tote bag that I'd like to use as a carry on bag, but I think the dimensions might be too big. It's close in size to our hard-sided carry-on suitcase, but it's soft-sided so it's kinda hard to get an exact measurement on it. It could definitely squish down to carry-on size if I don't overpack it. What should I do?

If you insist on bringing it, pack it WAY less than full - no more than 3/4 full. Squish it down and have someone measure each of the three dimensions while you hold it.

My concern for you is, where do you plan on putting it on the airplane? If you put it in overhead storage, be aware that whatever is in the bag will most likely get squashed by other luggage. So that means not packing anything breakable in it. The other place for your tote would be underneath the seat in front of you. And your bag can't be too big and still fit there.

You should be able to measure the maximum dimensions of the bag by measuring each side of the bag when empty.

I have a tote bag that I use that is about the same size as my carry-on (about 22" x 14" X 9") but I find that no one gives it a second look because it is clearly a tote bag, not a duffle or soft-sided luggage or a backpack. I know from experience that is fits just fine below the seat in front of me. I like the large size because I can carry my laptop and purse inside, and I still have room stuff our jackets inside when we arrive at MCO! -- Suzanne

ya know the first time I ever flew I was so freaked out they'd take my luggage away! I was like measuring my carry on bag even though it WAS a carry on bag. I get on the plane and my jaw dropped at all the crap people were putting on the plane! Now I take whatever I want as long as it's close! :rotfl:
