HI everyone,

We are heading to disneyland in May, and is our first trip ever overseas. This means the first plane flight for myself and and my 4 children (hubby travels often interstate). Just wondering what we are allow to take -food wise- in our carry-on luggage?! Am I allowed to pack snacks/drinks etc? Was wanting to pack potato chips, maybe some chewy lollies etc as well as bottled water or soft drink cans. Is that allowed? We are flying with air New Zealand and have a 4 hr stopover in Auckland. Thanks!

Hi, how exciting for you all :good vibes

You can take on chips, lollies and snacks in your carry on baggage. However, liquids above 100ml can't be take onboard. Once you pass through security in both Australia and again in Auckland you will be able to then purchase bottled drinks that you could carry on board that particular flight. Remember, when you land in LA eventually, if you have proper food left over you'll have to declare it, and while as long as it's commercially packaged you should be fine to bring it through, it will slow down your arrival process.

Air New Zealand should be able to provide you all with the drinks you need - especially when travelling with kids.

:)

I always pack snacks in both my carry on and check in luggage. Definitely take enough snacks for the kids in case they don't like the food that is being served on the plane.
As Mary said you can't take drinks but there is no real reason to, all drinks will be provided on your flights, you could take some empty drink bottles then fill with water once you have gone through screening if you really want to.

I always take a tin of pringles for my kids and some other stuff for the plane, but if you take just normal packets of chips the bag inflates.
In checked bags, I always put some stuff as well, like tiny teddies , ritz biscuits ect, just tell them in L.A , the kids have some biscuits, lollies, never had a problem, they just say ok , see ya
Don't take cans of drink, anyhow u are not allowed!!!

And remember when you get to LA they call sultanas "raisins", I was declaring what we had and confused the security dude totally. In my sleep deprived state I forgot they use a different term but luckily hubby remembered:)

I suggest taking a lot of snacks, my girls don't like plane food and often get hungry at weird times (flight wise). Last trip I took some chips and muesli bars but this time I am going to take a lot more.

I have been keeping a list when I see good ideas and so far have:
- cereal (that can be eaten dry like nutrigrain)
- roast chick peas
- protein bars
- trail mix

and I think I will take fruit and cut up veg (carrot/cucumber/cherry toms) and whatever we don't eat on the plane we will throw out before customs. I just hate my kids being fueled purely on sugar for such a long flight:)

Not sure if that would work with your stop over in NZ though...

I'm sure you will have a great time!

If you are flying the 777-300 they have snacks and drinks on demand. From memory the snack menu isn't hugely extensive, but there were enough choices to keep me happy. However, you may want to take a few snacks onboard for your trans-Tasman flight and four hour wait.

In saying that, you may prefer to go to one of the airport eateries to feel like you are filling in a bit of time.

Interesting. Here in NZ they are different things.

Sultanas are green grapes and raisins are black ones. Or perhaps raisins are also a green grape, but different variety? I'm confusing myself now.

Yes we have raisins and sultanas here too. Apparently not in LA security though!

My aunt gave me her recipe for bourbon fruit cake. It calls for white raisins.....which I assumed to be sultanas. :confused3

Hi WunderlustNZ,
I wonder if you could further explain the "snacks and drinks on demand" on the 777-300 ie how we "request them", etc and if they are available for economy class ~ we are flying late July.

Many thanks in advance :thumbsup2

Hi Annz53

The seat back entertainment screen has a list of drinks and a small list of snacks. You just press what you want, and shortly afterwards they should bring them to you.

From memory, you can't use this function at the start or end of your flight as this is when they are busy wheeling around the drinks cart and meals. However, during the middle of the flight it's a great option to have. Somehow it feels less intrusive than pushing that overhead light to flag an attendant.

When we flew Air New Zealand with our four children we found that we didnt really need to request snacks. Although I did pack them a goody bag with some minties (recommend for helping them pop their ears) some home baked muffins and cookies as well as some healthy alternatives. The last thing I wanted was my kids to be full of additives and preservatives while stuck on a 12 hour flight. This was mostly used at sydney airport and also New Zealand Airport during the waiting. On the flight my kids were not to interested in eating as the meals were enough, when they were not involved in watching a movie they were sleeping, or trying to sleep.

As long as you dont leave the terminal you can still have your food at NZ airport. As soon as we landed at LA I just got the kids to through all food in the bin. Packaged food was ok, but the fruit and baked items were tossed.

I was surprised how little they did eat, I guess because we flew through the night their bodies were not used to eating then.

We will definitely take snacks this year. The only snacks they offered on the 777 last year were salty pretzels! Can we take our own snacks in sealed sandwich bags? Like tiny teddies, BBQ shapes, grapes? I actually thought of getting one of those baby formula easy to dispense containers for my protein powder. Do u think that would be frowned upon?

I've taken Tiny Teddies and rice crackers on board when DS was younger. I've taken bananas and apples as well; but I tend to fly Melbourne direct or Melbourne/Sydney to the US. Haven't stopped in Auckland for a long time so I can't remember if you have to toss the fruit there or not.

Who did you fly with last time to only get pretzels?

I've flown Air NZ, United and Qantas and they've been handing out snack bags for at least the last 5 years or so. The bags usually contain a cookie of sort, mints, a sweet treat, something healthy and a drink. They used to include a piece of fruit like an apple as well. But the stewards walk round handing the fruit now or it's at the back of the 777.

I should have clarified the salty pretzels were the only snacks at the snack bar.
We flew with virgin australia Sydney/LA, they did come around with a little snack bag water and carmens bar. Would have loved some fruit. Did you take your snacks in their original packaging or your own containers?

I took my snacks in the original packaging. No point opening and transferring food stuff around.
