Carry-on bag with food?

Ok, Stupid planning question #563 from Sheli

Should I carry on the bag of food and snacks for the hotel room?

It is the right size for carry on.
It is not too heavy to lift.
It is full of non-perishable foods.
There are no forbidden items going in the bag.

So...Is it easier to carry it on and deal with any small hassles at security?
Or should I plan to check the bag to avoid any problems? I really don't want to eat smashed pop-tarts but if it will be a HUGE issue at security let me know.

Thanks! Sheli

Not a Pop-Tart eater, so here's my question? Are Pop-Tarts packaged in foil wrappers? If they are, that COULD be a problem for you. Someone may correct mne on this one, though.

Otherwise, no one cares as long as the size limits are not exceeded, and if you start eating on the airplane that you have enough to share with the entire cabin. :rotfl:

I flew last weekend and apparently the airlines are getting very picky about the weight of luggage. If the pieces are over 25 lbs each, there is a charge. Also I was sitting next to the window while we were waiting at the gate and I saw the luggage being loaded on the plane. The baggage handlers were throwing the luggage on the conveyer belt.

Are you speaking of carry on baggage being weighed? I have never, ever seen this done, can you tell us what airline did this to you?

That's the usual method for baggage loading.

As for getting food through security, I do it on every flight and have never had any problems.

I've had entire carry on bags full of snacks and never had a problem. You could always put your pop-tarts in a ziploc bag to avoid the foil issue. I can't imagine it weighing 25 lbs. unless you have a 6pk of bottled water too. I've never had a carry on bag weighed either. (SWA or USAirways.) Once on a return flight from MCO we got stuck in our home airport waiting for our luggage. They couln't unload the planes due to lightning so we sat in the airport for over 1 hr. and we were all glad I packed so many snacks. popcorn::

I actually take an insulated bag as my carryon. Since we're DVC members and eat at our villa quite a bit while we're there I usually make meatballs/sauce, precook chicken, precook ground meat and then freeze it packaged in plastic containers. That way when we get there I've got at least three meals pretty much done. The chicken I use for chicken cacciatore or chicken salad for lunches, the ground meat can be used several ways (tacos, Hamburger Helper, or do up a separate container already mixed into Sloppy Joes). I also usually throw in my insulated bag a few sticks of butter (in a Ziploc, of course) some shredded cheese (pretty much whatever I think might be quite a bit higher in price at the grocery in Orlando) The bag is a Thermos bag and is about 12 X 18 X 10 so it's perfect for a carryon. We go to the grocery for fresh stuff like milk, juice, some yogurt, salad makings, and eggs and I also ship a box by UPS a few days before we leave addressed to us at whatever resort we're at with our checkin date. In this box I put nonperishables like coffee, sugar, some cereal (out of box in Ziplocs) napkins, spices (premeasured in snack size Ziplocs) and whatever else I need for meals I have planned, boxed pasta, salad dressing, etc. It usually costs me about $15 to ship the box, but, it's usually stuff I have on hand anyway (bought when on sale). This way I'm able to keep our grocery store purchases in Orlando to around $50 and we eat really well during the week we're there. We also do eat out several times during the week, but, with at least four (sometimes six) of us (all adults except 4 yr old grandson) that gets expensive REAL quick. My bag keeps everything cold for up to 24 hours. It's usually still partially frozen when we get there and that's a 2 hour car ride, 2 hour flight and 30 minutes to WDW from MCO, plus however long it is until we get checked in. It's usually a total of about six to seven hours.

Welcome to Air Canada and Lufthansa (at least those two that I know of!) Air Canada tags 'cabin baggage acceptable' on questionable items, such as my small laptop case.

Back to the OP, may I suggest a USPS flat rate box for $8.10 which can be stuffed with food, or using netgrocer.com etc? far less headache and it only takes 2-3 days for the flat rate box to arrive. Just preship the box.

The overhead bins get pretty stuffed full these days, and your snacks may suffer more damage there than by shipping.

I ship items to myself every 2 weeks using flat rate boxes, including food, and it works every time (I am not allowed to transport ANY food internationally as part of my preclearance status)

We checked a suitcase that was full of food when we flew to MCO on Continental in March. They did search they bag and open my cool whip container of coffee that was duct taped. ;) No problems other than that. We carried on a small cooler. We used ME and didn't have a car. We had breakfast everyday in our room and had all our snacks. All we had to buy at WDW was milk. It was worth it to us. We had cereal, fruit, nuts, cookies, energy bars, v8 juice, cheese sticks, bread, lunch meat, crackers....
