Carring Car Seat in Airport

We have a car seat bag from Eddie Bauer for only $20.00. Is is large enough to carry a car seat and a booster.

Previous to having the bag I carried the seats by the straps over my shoulder and taking multiple trips to Canada put an end to this practice since some airports you walk forever to get through customs.

Based upon my experiences I would say I prefer the seat bag. It makes it alot easier to carry the seats while also moving the main luggage. It also ensures the seats remain clean. The bag also allows you to check the seats without concern of damage.

Additionally, the bag provides an area to move clothing into on the return flight freeing up space in your main luggage bag for unexpected souvenirs.

So it is ok to put a child under 2 on my lap but, I should put my 4 yrs in a car seat on the plane? And why don't you have to put your child in a car seat on a bus? I wish Airlines & busses would have a better/safer way for children. Someone is hopefully working on this.

Kae

Personally - for me, it is not OK for my 2yo to ride on my lap and I won't do it regardless of what the airlines or bus companies allow.

Just because the "airlines allow it" dosen't mean its "OK" IMHO. As adults we make the decisions as to what to do with our children, not the airlines or bus company. Do we really need a law or rule to tell us what is best??

Even though the airlines allow under 2's to fly free on a lap dh and I always purchased a seat and used a CRS for our daughters. I don't need towait for the airlines to address the situation, I will address it myself.

As for a bus - its your option you can ride the bus, rent a car or hire a towncar. Again just because Disney provides it for free or at a reduced charge dosen't mean that is your only option. If you are more comfortable using a CRS for your child then rent a car or hire a towncar.

No need for someone else to work on it - just do what is right for your family.

I just read through the AAP statement that another poster was kind enough to post a link to. The AAP recommends that children 4 years of age are OK in regular seat belts ON AIRCRAFT.

Just as an aside, I asked my wife about this. She's a pediatrician, and we recently flew to WDW with our 5 year old and 2.5 year old. We did not use car seats. My wife's reasoning was that the airplane seat belts would be sufficiently safe for our little ones. She explained that, in her opinion, the forces (and risks) in a car are much more severe than in an airliner, even in turbulence, and that the extra protection supplied by a carseat would just not be necessary on an airliner.

As for the DME and Disney Transport buses, there are no seat belts for adults, either. And on the Disney Transport buses there are no head rests (head rests prevent or lessen whiplash injuries). We accept certain risks, and if we don't want to accept them, we should do as another poster said and rent a car where there are seat belts and head rests, and car seats can be used for kids. We were fine with assuming those risks on the buses, but God Bless America and freedom of choice.

We bought a special bag at Babies R Us, and is has wheels so can be pulled, and also straps, so can be carried like a backpack. Works great for us.

I agree with most of what Eric/CleveRocks said except for the comment that the airplane seatbelt is sufficient protection for the little ones. According this article: AAP: Restraint use on Aircraft
Testing has shown that aircraft seat belts alone do not adequately protect a child younger than 3 years.

Just another bit of information for anyone that cares. :goodvibes

We haven't needed a bag for our carseat yet because we usually either put in on the stroller, or on our last trip I strapped it to the back of the stroller, back-to-back, with a bungee cord, which worked great. We always use it on the airplane and we always rent a car. When ds is bigger/older and we don't need it on the airplane but will still be using it the car, I will probably get a bag for whatever seat we're taking along just so it doesn't get dirty while in transit.

I had no idea they made these bags!! I'm so glad I checked out this thread!! Thanks everyone!! This will make our November flight to Disney MUCH easier getting through the airport (with stroller, car seat, child, husband, lap top and carry on luggage...ugh.)

I just pull the straps out to their full length and wear the carseat as a backpack--easier than using the bag.

Some manufacturers, Britax in particular, warn against carrying the car seat by the shoulder straps.

My DD is 5 and I still lug her car sear through the airport and bring it on the plane with me. Her seat is rated to 65 lbs and since she's only 40 lbs now, she's got plenty of time left in this seat. A five point harness is safer than just the lap belt that's on the plane and she knows when she's in her car seat, that's where she stays.

I have a carryon suitcase with a telescoping handle and in-line skate wheels. Using the tether strap, I attach the the car seat to the suitcase and wheel them both through the airport very easily. If I needed to, I'm sure with some bungie cords I could make it a tighter fit and strap a child in the car seat for even easier transit.

I've used a bag and I have forgotten a bag.

Ours has that space on the top to make it easier to carry around. We have also attached it to luggage, but I have forgotten how.

We personally love the bags if you can get ahold of one in time.
