I need new wall to wall carpet.

Dam those people who don’t take off their shoes!!!!
(hey sounds like a good debate topic :) )

Any recommendations…brand, type…etc

Did you get it at home depot, lowes, or a local carpet place…

Thanks

Charlie, I've got years of experience in the carpet industry. Is there any particular kind or any features (stain resistance, soft and cushy, etc.) you're looking for?

Obi-Wan,

As I recall we have stain resistance, plush, it has high pile(?)

It is 15 years old and it needs to be replaced.

Is it best to go to our local carpet store that's been around forever or a Home Depot..

What carpet is the best...also padding...

Thanks

If you don't mind, Obi-Wan, could you suggest a good carpet for old cocker spaniels? Our carpet needs replacing and I would like to get whatever is the easiest to clean when you have a very, very old dog. I heard of something that has a backing that doesn't allow liquid to get through to the underpadding and is easier to maintain.

I can't spend long on the computer right now, so if you don't mind, Charlie, let me answer Damo's question first.

There was a carpet with a poly backing on the carpet itself to prevent spills from going through. I don't believe it lasted long as, IIRC, installers had a hard time stretching the carpet with the backing. I'd suggest a padding that has the spill guard on it instead.

Easy to clean? Probably anything from Shaw with their R2X stain protector. It's not that the stain protector itself is superior to Stainmaster, but it's the application. Instead of being sprayed onto the surface of the carpet, Shaw immerses the carpet into the R2X protector during manufacturing.

I'll be back later with some more info for everyone ... right now it's time for Bones and House. :teeth:

Okay, I'm back. :)

Carpet store vs. big box home improvement store -- well, since 99% of my experience has involved a big box, I'm slightly biased in that regard. The carpet store might have more of a selection but quality wise they're equal. Some carpet stores may also offer a lower grade pad with the option to upgrade to the grade of pad that the big box will offer as their initial option.
Definitely go with a 6 lb. pad for plush and a 7 lb. pad for berber. If you shop around, make sure to check on things like additional charge for removing the old carpet and pad, moving furniture, limits on what they will and will not move, etc.

In terms of softness, I like the soft nylons like Stainmaster's Tactesse. They have a great feel to them if that's what you're looking for. Many of the polyesters also have a soft feel and vibrant colors, especially the ones that are PET polyester. PETs are made from recycled plastic soda bottles.

Nylon is a strong fiber and keeps its like new appearance longer. It's also more expensive to produce, but worth the money. PET Polys are not quite as strong as the nylons but still very strong and are priced for someone on a budget. Olefin or polypropylene is naturally stain resistant and used a lot in berbers and commercial carpet, but can be a very rough fiber.

All of the big manufacturers -- Shaw, Mohawk, Beaulieu, Gulistan, and others -- make high-quality carpet. They all make carpet from branded and unbranded nylon. Branded would be like Stainmaster or Solutia WearDated nylon, unbranded is made by someone else or even by the manufacturer. Nylon is nylon and I really don't see much of a difference between branded and unbranded.

I don't know if that's answered all of your questions. It's hard to give an opinion or recommendation on specific carpet without seeing it in person. If you have any other questions, I'll be more than happy to help. :)

Karastan Cellini, pricey but worth it :)

Edited to add: We also purchased the Karastan spill proof padding. (Liquid does not penetrate it, making if easier to clean up.)

We are in the market for carpeting, also. Our berber is as old as the house, 13 years.

We are looking at Lowes due to the "buy anything over $299 and you a year free financing" thing.

I'm glad you brought up this topic and thanks for the advice on the different types of carpeting Obi-Wan!

I'd go with the burnt orange shag. Nothing screams classly like burnt orange shag :teeth:

We are right there with you, man. We're going to have new carpet installed in the livingroom as soon as we can afford it.

When we bought the house, we though "Oh..cream carpeting. How CUTE!". Nearly 4 years later, it ain't so cute. It's stained (mostly from the cat puking on it, but also from other things) and ugly and I hate it. DH wants to get sort of a pinky-purple-y carpet that's sort of plushy and stain-resistant.

I think after we get the new carpet, I am going to make people take their shoes off in the entry way (DH included) to keep dirt, etc off the carpet.

Actually shag is coming back into style!

My mom has sold carpet for over 25 years, so from my experiance and her knowledge I would go to a carpet store before any Home Depot of Lowes. You DO get better quality carpet, and better padding. Also you will get to work with people who know what they are talking about verses a sales floor person from Home Depot.

Also carpet stores usually use trusted installers. The big places just contract it out to the lowest bider.

Please buy weardated...I work for the company which makes the fiber.

Whatever you do, do NOT, repeat DO NOT
let EMPIRE into your home!!!!!!!!!
Their installers are thugs, and the "local" office
that sets it up has better defense than our military
when it comes to getting answers/restitution from management!
I cannot say enough bad things about them
and if DH would let me there'd be a large sign on our property about it!

Fabrica.
It is the best.
It is in the White House.
Honest! :flower:
