Carpet question

Bit of an odd question but hoping that someone knows the answer.

On a recent cruise on the Magic I noticed that the carpet outside the staterooms had a repeating pattern in it. I asked our room host and concierge what it symbolised, but they were unable to tell me.

Disney does nothing by accident! I know that there is something behind it, and would love to know what the ropes and stars mean. Does anyone know here?

Thanks

When you look at the pattern, notice that it is a map of the world. if you are facing the map in the proper orientation with north on top. If you walk north you will be going toward the bow of the ship. If you walk south you will be heading aft on the ship.

I believe OP is asking about the configuration of the stars and ropes on the carpet. My only input is that it looks like the rank insignia used for the officers (maybe for the various captains the Magic has had?).

Initially the map meant something on the classics. However, it's been reported that after several dry docks some of the patterns are no longer placed correctly. Has anyone actually checked that since the last one.

Where was this picture taken? Was it Deck 3?

Yes the carpets designs are for wayfinding.

Am I the only one who gets that OP is asking about the seemingly random placement of the stars & ropes on the carpet? The picture doesn't even show the map part of the carpet, just the stars & ropes.

I agree, Disney doesn't just do random stuff like that. It generally would have some meaning.

::rotfl:: stars and ropes. Yep. I totally get that the question is about the stars and ropes but have no idea what the significance is.

The picture was taken on deck 8 in September on the WBTA.

I am asking about the pattern of ropes and stars. While we were on board I checked and it was the same on all stateroom decks.

It's inspired by many things.

As well as a reflection of officers rank and the Captains rank these indicate knowing the ropes a term that they know how to be a sailor.

Ropes have many nautical meanings from docking and there use there, to the term knot, or nautical mile, is used world-wide to denote one's speed through water. Now the measure of knots is with electronic devices, but years ago such devices were unknown.
It was a speed measuring device the "log line." from this method we get the term "Knot." It was a length of twine marked at 47.33-foot intervals by colored knots. At one end a log chip was fastened. It was shaped like the sector of a circle and weighted at the rounded end.

The posters answering that it is decorative, Or includes a map with four ships place in USA East and west coast and Europe are correct and did answer and understand the OPs question, it also points out the direction of the ship.

I think many posters here did understand the OPs question and in different ways have contributed to the answer.

Stars can mean a few things, as well as a way to work out where a ship is, ( before radar and satellite) stars reflect officers rank, and stars also mean entertainment and showbiz, that all meets up with Disney Cruise line, and a five star service.

I would disagree. OP stated in their post right above yours that they were asking specifically about the stars and ropes. That means that no, the people answering did not understand the question. Was their information valid nonetheless, yes.

The globe/map is barely in the picture, whereas the stars and ropes are clearly the point of focus. If OP wanted to know about the globe/map, they would have included it.

I would disagree, the main replies that "added value" were all on the correct wavelength from the original question with one poster saying they all didn't get it.

Within my answer all of the replies that added value were included and were in ways like a piece of a jigsaw correct. As you said "their information valid nonetheless, yes." which actually confirms my point entirely.

This question was asked on a "Art of the theme show tour" and my answers was based on that and the CM said there are various different reasons why the carpets are the way they are as thier inspired by a number of influences. She said in summary you can find your own interpretation and then go with that.

I would disagree. Posts don't add value if they answer a different question, regardless if they were correct or wrong. You could stat all kinds of facts about anything but if it doesn't address the actual question its just noise and I think that was validated by the ops follow up post.

And to say that they've been influenced by numerous nautical themes really doesn't answer the question at all, I'm guessing the cm probably didn't know either. It is an intriguing question bc there is a distinct pattern in the number of stars and ropes, but just bc they are influenced doesn't answer the question of why there are 6 stars or three bars, etc... And to another posters point, it's so specific it doesn't make sense that it doesn't mean something, otherwise why not just make the stars and ropes repeat over and over, it would make it easier to replace damaged pieces etc.... I genuinely think this has stumped the collective knowledge of this board

And sometimes a cigar is just a cigar. There may be absolutely no hidden meaning behind it. It might have just looked cool to whoever was doing the interior designing.

I knew about the globe being the correct way up when your were walking towards the front of the ship.

The pattern of (reading down from the top) 1 rope, 6 stars, 2 ropes, 5 stars, 3 ropes, 4 stars, 3 ropes, 5 stars has to signify something. The concierge (Michelle) even sent an email onshore to ask, and they couldn't get an answer.

Definitely (as has been said) a Dan Brown level mystery lol

One thing I've learned is that Disney does nothing random

Sorry, taking off the Disney colored glasses for a minute here. No, they do do things randomly or at least not with some hidden purpose. Not everything is a Hidden Mickey.
