Carnival Panorama passengers being held onboard in Long Beach

GP is general public. The state of California I know is encouraging people to fill for unemployment and or short term disability.

GP was a typo. Should have read DP, per PP.
Since my response was reported and deleted, allow me to correct this error.

I won’t be relying on the government. They are consistently 3 steps behind and any disability or unemployment payment you (won’t) be getting will also be three steps behind. The mortgage payment and the credit card companies still demand their payments.

We are scheduled to be on a cruise that departs Hawaii on May 8. If Disney is sailing, we will plan on cruising unless some unforeseen circumstance arises before then. We will be taking our laptops, just in case we are quarantined. DD and I could both work remotely if we had to. DH cannot work remotely, but we will cross that bridge if we come to it.

This is why we cancelled our May DCL Cruise. I’m done teaching in early May when the semester ends but my kids still have school until mid June, my husband has a regular 12 month job, and the possibility of quarantine is not one I want to chance. I’m not worried about us getting sick but I am worried about quarantine due to someone else on the ship being sick. I’m also worried about who will care for our pets if we can’t make it home as scheduled, what happens to our post-cruise reservations if we are quarantined, what happens to our flights home if we are quarantined, and the multiple repercussions for my kids who will likely end up with truancy letters after a quarantine (after 10 absences, our district sends truancy letters and we planned our trip so that they would hit exactly 10 if we allowed for 5 days of illness during the year before our trip).

School districts will make exceptions to the 10 absences at this point. I'm sure that there will be many disruptions to student attendance this year due to the Coronavirus. I work at a school and we've advised parents to keep their children at home if they are feeling sick, even if they are already at 10 or more absences.

Not wanting to seem unsympathetic, but the news has a woman with cancer who has a long story of missing chemo, needing banana’s and specific requirements such as needing banana’s (they ran out). What I don’t understand is that ANYONE who has travelled (especially cruising) in the past month KNOWS being quarantined is a possibility. So if having meds, chemo so short to disembark date, etc. is so vital, why take the risk? Don’t complain because YOU took the risk, threw the dice and crapped out. AGain, I’m not trying to sound unsympathetic AT ALL. Even we knew when we cruised early Feb that it was a chance. While we got lucky with no quarantine, we returned with the flu. Would we have gotten the flu If we had not gone? Dunno. But we took the risk and well......

Folks, this goes beyond do I get the vs or don’t I. This has greater implications. IF you travel and get quarantine OR stuck somewhere because you can’t get back for WHATEVER reason, are you prepared to deal with that? Do you have money to support extra hotel nights or flight changes? What are implications with your job? Will your work require you use sick days or vacation days to cover your quarantine time? Or is it excusable? Will they say, well...you shouldn’t have traveled as it’s known there are warnings advising against it? Do you have pets that need longer care? Can you afford to pay for the extra 2 weeks your pets may be boarded? Can you kids miss 2 weeks of school? Will your school allow your child back? Only you can put out all the questions that pertain to you as they vary for all of us. But don’t roll the dice KNOWING the risks and then moan because the “quarantine” happened to you. Merely thinking aloud here......not throwing stones by any means. Just we all merely have to ask ourselves, is it worth it. This pertains to the majority who have paid these trips in full with a lot of money invested. So again, there is a LOT to weigh here. At the end of the day, while we can play secondhand quarterback, each of us have to be comfortable with our own decisions. It’s a lot to weigh and for some it’s easier than others.

A school district near me closed today for 2 weeks because one kid was confirmed and another suspected, then the 2 weeks ends at the start of spring break so kids are out for 4 weeks! Parents are scambling big time. It's making me nervous about school and work, not the virus itself.

And unlike others who have ripped me recently on Disboards for making these kinds of remarks , I’m supportive of you in your common sense approach to this issue .

cant stress enough , please everyone- please use common sense in your choices over this issue.
Also please remember in how your choices could impact others ...

Ive somehow missed this story so I dont know the specifics. I am assuming this is on one of the currently "quarantined" ships and she already missed a chemo appointment? If thats the case then that sounds incredibly irresponsible. I need infusions every 8 weeks. Because of side effects from the chemo I dont want to travel the first week after my infusion. One of the things that was at the top of my list is realistically what are my options if I am stuck in Italy past that 8 week point. Our vacation was just about 3 weeks and having only a 4 week cushion made me uncomfortable. That said, we dont know it from HER perspective. Maybe she feels like this is the last chance she will have to do this sort of trip. I cant imagine how heartbreaking it might be to want to do something my whole life, have my final chance within reach and then have something like this happen. At that point, I might be very tempted to do something irresponsible.

Odd she just cant take K pills and has to have bananas. I have an infusion Thursday and have been having severe muscle spasms during the last two sessions. Everything Ive read leads me to believe pills or a food source might be helpful. Ive been going the banana route (and SO sick of them right now).

I see some saying how they'd love a 2 week "quarantine vacation" after a vacation. I wonder what their jobs are that it wouldnt stress their coworkers to have to cover an additional 2 weeks. My husband got the letter saying that he would have to quarantine for 2 weeks upon returning from a level 2 country. That was the final nail for us, he couldnt do that to his co workers.

Well, it’s started:
“The coronavirus is now turning legal -- a quarantined cruise in California has been sued for allegedly putting passengers at risk ... when they knew the virus was running rampant on the ship.
Ronald and Eva Weissberger -- two elderly passengers who are currently on the Grand Princess cruise ship that was quarantined and stranded out in the Bay Area waters for at least a week -- just filed suit against the parent company, Princess Cruise Lines.
In the docs, obtained by TMZ, the couple claims the PCL was grossly negligent in allowing them and thousands of other passengers onboard in late February ... when the ship's staff knew damn well at least 2 other passengers with coronavirus had just disembarked from a previous voyage -- and at least one of them died as a result.
They go on to allege that PCL had an awful screening process -- claiming that the new group of passengers were only asked to fill out a basic piece of paper stating if they were sick or not. There was no other testing, so claim the Weissbergers.
Adding insult to injury, the couple goes on to claim that at least 62 passengers onboard the current cruise were also on the prior infected voyage. BTW, the Grand Princess was finally allowed to dock Monday in Oakland.”

So one company is requiring employees who visit areas such as China, Italy, etc. to report it to HR. They are not allowed to return to work for 2 weeks. What ISN’T clear is if These 2 weeks are covered by vacation Days, partial sick days or unpaid. So again, just another thing to think about......if quarantined and you don’t have a job allowing for work from home, how are you covered with work? Yet another aspect of many...

We did have these questions too and asked for clarification. We havent yet received an answer. I dont think we are getting blown off it's just an incredibly busy time and right now my husband is working a shift opposite his supervisor. By the time my husband gets into work, HR is gone. If I believed it mattered Id be more assertive in getting an answer but I really cant imagine that we are going at this point, just too many issues for us personally.

If you are taking a 7 day vacation , then in my opinion ... you need to have a total of 300 to 400 hours of work vacation time built up to cover just in case one is quarantined.
If one doesn’t have this built up, then in my opinion .... one has to make a choice ....
Including if one chooses to go through ones work HR department for an answer.

Q- is relying upon others for your own destiny a good choice?

A- only you know that answer -

please people... use common sense when making travel / vacation plans as the choices you make could impact others....

Thats the biggest concern in this house as well. We aren’t in the elevated risk category, but you don’t get paid when you get confined to a ship and you have other responsibilities. I just came off the Dream and I was sweating debark because so many people were coughing onboard and appeared sick.

Oh wow , did Disney test them before they got off ?

Test them with what? The test kits that our government has made readily available?

Exactly my point. Disney shouldn’t be allowing sick people to disembark before at least taking their temps. Other ships are doing it which is why they’re being quarantined .

We left the ship the morning the new procedures were instituted. My understanding is that temp checks will he happening on embark and debark, now. The problem is that not everyone infected and contagious has a fever. These screenings are a whole lot of bs, IMO. Really a worthless measure. No one is sick until they are, but no one is tested until they are sick and by that point, its too late. Honestly, I could be infected and not know it. We have a confirmed case of unknown origin just down the street from my house. Can’t cram the cat back in the bag. We are beyond containment now.

AFAIK nobody is quarantining ships because a debarking passenger has a fever. Most are cases of a direct line to a confirmed case. For example, Princess knows the Grand Princess had a passenger who tested positive once they were home and the other ships they are stopping have crew who were potentially exposed by that passenger while they were on the GP and have since transferred to other ships.

Ummm...300-400 hours? So you should have 7-8 weeks of vacation time before taking a 7 day trip? Guess I best start saving my 2026 trip.

Do the math :

take about 3 days off ..say 1 pre and two post (at home relaxing b4 heading back to work) = 32 hours
your 7 day vacation = 56 hours
you get quarantined or etc aprx 100-112 hours

and to add it 16 hours just for the heck of it cuz you are trying to destress yourself 16 hours
out.... --------------------
216 hours
'sake of argument = 300 hours just to be safe
( IMO 300 hours you need in your time and leave work "bank" ....use approx 220 hours and then have 80 houts left over just in case as imo its not smart to totally drain out your time and leave just to go on vacation)

ANY QUESTIONS??

again, people - use common sense when making travel choices as your behavior could impact others.......................
