Has anyone done this tour before at AK? We’re interested in it but not if it’s a waste of time!

It is not a waste of time. It's one of the best values in WDW and 100% of the money goes to elephant conservation. If you want to learn about elephants then it's a wonderful tour.

My husband and I took the tour in December. It was a good tour, if you are interested in elephants. But I was expecting more behind the scenes such as seeing where the elephants slept and were taken care of each day. We did see them up closer than the safari ride, but never up real close.
So, we liked the tour, but we were somewhat disappointed not to have substance in the tour. The bus takes you to an area where you can view the elephants from behind where you see them from the safari ride. You spend the entire time there taking pictures and listening to a native African tell about the elephants and their problems in Africa. That part was interesting to me. But I was expecting to see behind the scenes where they were kept and how they are taken care of (bathing, medical, feeding, night time, etc). After about a half hour at that site we board the bus again and go back to where we started.
Would I do it again, probably not, but that's jus our viewpoint. Maybe I expected too much.

My 9yo DD and I did it in December and thoroughly enjoyed it! It was just as @disneyseniors described. Like them I had hoped it would include time seeing where they were cared for, etc. but I read a number of reviews before I signed up and understood what it would entail.

This was our first behind the scenes tour and I'm sure we'll do more. I'm going to look into the Rhino tour as I believe it involves more of what disneyseniors was looking for and my DD really wants to do the 'Behind the Seeds' tour in Epcot.

It was cool and I’m glad that I did it. If you are interested in elephants, then you should enjoy it. It’s neat to see the area from a different angle and it’s not too pricey.

agree this is a good value. Some of the tour prices are outrageous!
