Caribbean Beach FAQ Part IV

From my trip report 6/13-6/21:

Food Court:

It seemed like a wider variety of items and special menu additions on various days of the week. In particular, they had specialty omelets (kind of a Caribbean flair to them) almost every day that were good. Then for lunch and dinner one of the stations had this Royale Sandwich – get this! It has three types of slices meat, cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, and a special sauce (I’m probably leaving something out) on this wonderful seasoned roll – great!! The sandwich comes with these incredible chips, potato chips coated with Jerk Seasoning -- anyone who came to our table with those chips had to fight the others off to keep them for themselves!

We love the food court and the wide range of selections – we eat there a lot. We did the refillable mugs – we always do, as they’re such a great value for us and we love having more to use here at home! The grab’n’go seemed to have a greater selection of cut-up fruit, or veggies, in addition to the usual choices.

Thank you to EVERYONE who has contributed to this thread! Dh and I are going to CBR for 11 nights at the end of September to celebrate our 11th anniversary! We've never stayed here before, so we're so excited!

Quick question: We have not made any room requests. Do you think this is okay? I'm having visions of getting a room far, far away from OPR with a lousy view. We've been to Disney many times, so we will actually spend more time at the resort than most people who will be spending most days in the parks. I just almost feel guilty making a "request", when we're both athletic so we don't need to be close for that reason, and we don't mind a high floor room for the same reason. I don't want to take away close rooms from people who need them more than me. Yet, I would like a nice view from the room at the very least. KWIM? Should we just let Disney magic do its thing, or put in some kind of request?

Also, is the food at Shutters good enough to use a TS credit on? It would be nice to enjoy one nice meal at the resort.

Thanks again!!! :goodvibes

A few times we made one request for a "corner room, pretty view" and we had a lovely view! I would add that to the reservation and at check-in, mention to the CM checking you in that you have no preference for the location of your room, but it would be so nice of it could have a corner room with a pretty view. If you have a very nice CM s/he will look for something with a nice view, if a cranky one - well, when you get to your room and it's a crummy view, try one more time by asking for a another room with a nicer view. I think you will wind up with a nice view b/c you will accept any Village.

I hope you do have a lovely view - we've been blessed every stay at CBR with some of the best views. Our first stay it was a parking lot view, but a corner room and so pretty we didn't care about the parking lot...it really was pretty anyway!

I am sure you'll have a wonderful stay!

We have never requested a view. We have had some great ones though. Personally I don't think there is a bad view at CBR. When they tell you where your room is you could always ask if there is something closer.

I understand there is a charge for using the internet, but what exactly do I need to be able to get online, is it wifi? DH is taking an online class and will have to get online to take a test.

Our last trip to CBR our view was the parking lot in Barbados. This was even with a request in for the popular Jamaica 45 or Aruba 51. Was told there was nothing available during our stay for our requests. But you know what, I actually ended up loving our room. The walk was perfect for us to Ol port (yes, could be longer for some, but for me, just fine and nice view to go there). Also, we were so close to the bus stop. Great for stormy weather. Close to custom house. Car right outside our door. Quick walk to quiet pool, laundry.

My first trip I booked a waterview with a request of Aruba and I got it. But, that walk was actually farther than this one. It was great to be right in front of the beach, however.

So, I'm not so sure requests are always going to go down the way you think. Be prepared to enjoy yourself no matter. I would've been however upset to get South Trinidad. But then again, I guess I couldn't get that because I didn't get a pirate room. I believe they probably have the longest walk and the worst bussing situation, but that could be just my perception.

Big clunky Ethernet cable ... no wifi. This is the same at all of the WDW resorts.

Posted my review as a separate thread, but since it will quickly disappear I'll post here also. This CBR thread has a wealth of info, really helped me out when planning our trip.

Caribbean Beach Resort - CBR - July 10 - 19, 2009

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

HISTORY: This was our 26th Disneyworld trip. Our first 5 trips were at Port Orleans Riverside, since then we have stayed multiple times at all of the value resorts. It was me-47, DH-49, DS-23, DD-16.

PRE-TRIP: I decided we needed a change and booked Caribbean Beach Resort, mostly because it was recently refurbished. Our trip was for Saturday, July 11 through Sunday July 19, 8 nights, preferred building. We had 4 days left on a previous park hopper, no dining plan.

TRAVEL DAY: We left home at 7:30 am on Friday, July 10 planning to stop in Tallahassee, Florida for the night which was an 8 hour drive. The next morning we would finish the last 4 hours of our trip to Disneyworld. As we so often do, we changed our plan. We were almost in Tallahassee, it was still early, everyone was in agreement. I called Disney Reservations and asked if we could check in a day early. The CM said a room was available, so we continued on and arrived at CBR around 9:30 pm. Our 8 night trip was now a 9 night trip.

CHECK IN: Since it was kind of late, there was no line at check in. The CM said something about a second floor room. I asked her if we could possibly get a room Building 25, ground floor. She disappeared for a few seconds, came back and said we have room 2514 in Martinique, Building 25, ground floor. Great! Check in was fast and easy.

MARTINIQUE-BUILDING 25-ROOM 2514-GROUND FLOOR: We walked into our room, took in a deep breath, it smelled very fresh. Did a visual inspection, was very clean and neat, we were happy. What we liked about the room(some of this is in comparison to value resorts because that is what we are use to): the extra space really made a difference, the privacy curtain comes in handy when you have grown children, the extra lavatory is nice to have, my son did use the coffee pot a few mornings, I put two cups of ice in the refrigerator the night we got there to make sure it was cold enough, and the ice was still in the cups the morning we left, so, the frig was definitely cold. Now, the number one thing we liked about our CBR room is…….the “old fashioned” air conditioners! First of all they cool off the room very fast, as compared to value resorts that have the “updated” systems. And the noise so drowns out any outside noise. We loved this. The beds were comfortable, I slept better here than I do at the values, mostly because of the humming of the a/c.

DH’s IMPRESSION FIRST MORNING: Maybe we should switch to Pop Century half way through our trip. (Remember this.)

MOUSEKEEPING: Our room was cleaned everyday, vacuumed, wiped down, extra towels, the sheets were changed twice, every 4 days. No complaints from us. We left a tip every morning.

FOOD COURT: Now this is where I prefer the value resorts, their selection is more., but we were satisfied. We ate breakfast most mornings, I was hooked on the Western Omelet and potatoes with a bowl of fresh pineapple, but tried the French Toast/Bacon a couple of mornings. We also tried the Pasta w/Marinara Sauce and Meatballs, Pork with Mashed Potatoes, Corn, and Cornbread, and the16” Pepperoni Pizza, all were good. My kids were hooked on the Worms in Dirt, DH and I liked it too! Also got a couple of M & M cookies, I love cookies. We bought refillable mugs and used them a lot. I drink a lot of tea and liked the sweetened green tea. We got ice cream once, you buy the cup at checkout, then go to the soft serve machine (vanilla, chocolate, or swirl) and fix it yourself, with chocolate or butterscotch syrup.

POOL: We swam in the main pool two times. It was great! We all went down the slide multiple times, so fun. Loved watching the bucket overturn in the kids section, the little ones were having a blast in there. Liked that they had towels by the pool.

LAUNDRY ROOM: We washed 3 loads of clothes twice while there. $2.00 for washer/ $2.00 for dryer. Worked fine and had to only use one drying cycle for each load.

SIDEWALK AROUND LAKE: DH walked 2 laps every morning. Took 20 minutes to walk each lap. (He really grew to like this.) I walked a few times also, wish we had this atmosphere to walk around every day!

WILDLIFE: We saw ducks, squirrels, lizards, rabbits, and I won’t mention anything about the 2 ft. black snake that crossed the path in front of me and DD near our room (IT WAS ON A PATH, NOT THE SIDEWALK IN FRONT OF OUR ROOM), or about the alligator in the lake. We’re from south Louisiana, not a biggy for us. Mosquitos - didn't see any, not even one.

CONCEIRGE: I had to go ask about finding a nearby clinic to take DD to on Friday. They had a pamphlet and map to get to Florida Hospital Centra Care Clinic right around the corner from the Downtown Disney Disneyworld entrance. We went there and the people were very nice. It was CROWDED and we were there for a total of 4 hours (walk in clinic), but it served what we needed. (This clinic has complimentary shuttle service from Disney resorts if you ever need it. Very nice to know.)

GAME ROOM: My DD and DS played here a few times and had fun. They don’t have the games where you win tickets to buy stuff, like at the value resorts, but that’s ok.

BUS TRANSPORTATION: We drove everywhere except the Magic Kingdom where we rode the bus 2 times used the Martinique bus stop. The first time, a MK bus was leaving right as we got there. But it took only about 10 minutes for another one to come. The second time, a MK bus got there almost as soon as we got to the bus stop. Both times we were first to be picked up and first to be dropped off. The numerous bus stops were not bad at all to us.

ILLUMINATIONS: DH and I pulled up a chair by the Shutter’s entrance and watched the fireworks. You can actually see the top of Spaceship Earth from there. I enjoyed it with an M & M cookie and a White Russian from the pool bar. Yum.

MISC: The Space Shuttle took off while we were there. Lots of Cast Members came out by Shutter’s entrance and people stopped in their tracks to watch. But, there were lots of clouds and only some got a glimpse of it through an open patch in the clouds. If you weren’t looking in the right spot, you missed it, I did.

DH’s FINAL REMARK ABOUT CBR: I would definitely want to stay here again. And that remark pretty much sums up what we thought about Caribbean Beach Resort.

PS--I took a walk around the lake and did a “photo shoot” around the entire circle. Will open up a Photobucket account later and post all of the pictures in the order that I took them. CBR is such a beautiful resort.

First of all, it's always nice to see a fellow Louisiana resident here on the boards. We are from North Louisiana, West Monroe to be exact.

Second, thanks for your honest opinion of the CBR. Everything you posted is pretty much spot-on with our opinion of the resort. I think we like the CBR so much because it's different from our Louisiana surroundings.

Again, thanks for the review.

Lisa,
I responded to you on the other thread, but I'll say "thanks" again!

PrincessKsMom,
Yes, I did mean the sink....you know, sink, lavatory, wash basin, .......:rotfl:I should have used Disney terms, CBR has double sinks in the dressing area, where the value resorts have just one sink.
:)

Sorry, I just think of a lavatory as being the combined package -- sink and toilet. I thought maybe CBR had some kind of family suite room like at the ASMu and it sounded like a good deal -- to have both extra sinks and a toilet! :rotfl:

I guess I'm a little surprised - I knew there were alligators in the "wild" in some parts of Florida but...so this is something we should keep an eye out for?? Mind you, I wouldn't mind seeing one at a distance.

In Florida if there is water you can figure there will be a gator. Just be aware. Disney does keep an eye on the size of them but they are all over WDW property.

Really, alligators can end up in any body of water where they exist. There was one in my subdivision awhile back. I don't think you have to worry about anything. If Disney thinks it poses a threat, they'd get rid of it I'm sure.

does anyone know the answer to this???

Hi,

I'm sorry ~ just saw your question this morning! Yes, we have had a roll-away twice at CBR - last time, in 2005, the fee was $15.00 a day and we found it best to call housekeeping when we arrive a our room and they bring it up pretty quickly.

Still only 4 allowed in the room, with one under 3, but we had pre-teens who preferred having their own bed. Worked great both times for us. We've also had a roll-away at POFQ.

Hope this helps! Have a great trip! :goodvibes
