I'm not much of a dark ride photographer, but I played around a bit last night. I thought I remembered someone wanting a shot of the caretaker on HM, so he was my target.

It's rather rough. All I have with me is Lightroom and it's noise reduction is awful.

It was a 3/10 second, f/1.8, 50mm, ISO 6400, no flash (of course). I shot in manual mode. I used the camera's highest non-extended aperture and my lens' widest aperture. I ignored my meter and adjusted the shutter speed to whatever I thought would give me a good exposure.

I recommend against using the extended ISO modes because they add no advantage if you shoot RAW. They don't appear to do anything different than increasing your exposure in post production but they take away some headroom if you get your exposure too high.

It might be possible to spot meter your way through the ride, but any other metering mode is likely to be fooled by the large dark areas. I prefer to just go on instinct and chimping.

Wow Mark- that is far and away the best shot I have ever seen of the DW Caretaker. Was the ride stopped? If not you have some rock steady hands my friend. Even if it was stopped- you still do! Very impressive. :thumbsup2

That is a really good photo for what you had to work with, you get the "good hands" award for this week!

You bring up a good point about extended ISO, most of the time it is not worth using. One of the "plusses" for Canon's T1i is the higher ISO over the Xsi, but it appears to be extended ISO and the noise level is extreme. As you mention, just underexposing and bumping it up in software is about as good (or about as bad).

Wow! Amazing job there! Keep them coming. Hope you are having a terrific time on your trip!
