Wondering if anyone has given thought to offsetting the environmental impact of CO2 for holidays to WDW ?

Would appreciate any schemes that offer a geniune option :goodvibes

I'm interested in this also...:thumbsup2 I've looked at this ...

Silverjet offset the entire flight.....but they only fly into NY.

What a really good idea, I get to feel really good about my holiday :cool1: and now I don't have to feel so bad about flying there :hippie:

I heard an interesting discussion about this on the radio a short while ago (well, I found it interesting! ;) ).

The suggestion was that we should look for carbon-offseting schemes that fund programmes aimed at research and development of programmes to avoid or reduce emissions, rather than the 'plant-a-tree' schemes that did nothing to address future emission goals.

The main point was that some carbon-offsetting schemes 'only' plant trees. Whilst this is a great effort towards replacing the huge areas of trees cut down each year, it is not a long-term solution to the human contribution to global warming and the way in which our appetite for non-renewable energy is growing all the time. It was even suggested that this kind of offsetting scheme could be harmful, not because of the tree-planting itself, but because it gave people a clearer conscience and feel-good factor about their carbon footprint, without encouraging them to look at the bigger picture.

It was NOT a gloom and doom programme suggesting that we all take walking holidays in the UK instead of flying abroad ;), just pointing out that we need to be working towards ways we can all reduce carbon emissions in the future in all aspects of our lives, not just flights.

Of course, I've forgotten the names of any schemes that were being touted as suitable ... shows how much I was listening!

Good point Hilary, would have liked to have heard that radio discussion myself. Going to research on the net to find the most appropriate carbon neutral scheme for me..

Although I do feel that these "tree planting" schemes are good. It probably encourages people to actually consider their carbon footprint in the first place, and this has to be a good thing.

It's certainly something that in the past, i'm ashamed to say i haven't really considered.

:surfweb: Whilst writing this a plane has just gone over my house for about the 6th time today. I live near a RAF Base, does the government monitor their carbon footprint? ah well that's a question for another time and place.......

Wow the cost to off set during the school holidays is the same as any other time. This must be a first!!!!!

More day light savings is needed.

"However, Daylight Saving Time does save energy. Studies done by the U.S. Department of Transportation show that Daylight Saving Time trims the entire country's electricity usage by a small but significant amount, about one percent each day, because less electricity is used for lighting and appliances. Similarly, in New Zealand, power companies have found that power usage decreases 3.5 percent when daylight saving starts. In the first week, peak evening consumption commonly drops around five percent.

Energy use and the demand for electricity for lighting homes is directly related to the times when people go to bed at night and rise in the morning. In the average home, 25 percent of electricity is used for lighting and small appliances, such as TVs, VCRs, and stereos. A good percentage of energy consumed by lighting and appliances occurs in the evening when families are home. By moving the clock ahead one hour, the amount of electricity consumed each day decreases."
