hi everyone,
i'm traveling with a family member who is diabetic. she has an insulin pump and we were wondering if it would be possible for her to get the carb counts on menu items. do we just ask at our first dinner? should we call ahead?
any experience?

I suggest submitting a medical form where you can make your specific dietary needs known. :flower:

Diabetes is actually one of the more common medical issues DCL encounters. There are sugar free desserts at each meal. Do submit the medical form. THis will provide you with a refrigerator for insulin (if you put it on the form) rather than just the beverage cooler that is standard in the room. It will also provide any other assistance she needs. If you need carb counts for the various dished, place that on the medical form.

They are very aware of things like "no added sugar," etc.

Calculating carbs is something that pumpers (or any type 1 diabetics) need to become proficient in themselves. It's just knowing food portions and their basic values. Once you've done it awhile, it becomes like second nature. It would be great to have nutritional values listed everywhere, but that's just not realistic.

Also, some sugar free desserts can be equal in carbs (and calories) to the regular items. Unless it's sf Jello, I would tell her to steer clear of those desserts. It's a gamble to guess on their nutritional value and how insulin will react to them. Best to save some carbs for an occassional real treat.

Has she been on the pump long?

I think it would be best to call DCL and inquire. I am certain that they have it somewhere or could put it together. My 18 year old daughter (diabetic) also counts carbs for her insulin use. We asked the first night and found that no one including the head server could not get the information we were looking for. My daughter told them to not to worry about it after several conversations took place that night. But, despite not having the information, my daughter is good at estimating the carbs and never had a problem. Now of course she is not much of a dessert eater, so she did not have to take those into consideration very much.

Call DCL and ask them. Maybe they need to get something in writing for those that are required to count carbs for diabetic reasons.

I'm very happy to see this thread. For the last year I have been actively persuing DCL and WDW to have better selections for diabetics, and there are low carb sugar free desserts available now in other places for diabetics. So why not on the ship.
I think they could come up with a basic carb counter that could help if your new at this or just for a little re assurance in meal planing. I have found that the cruise line was very interested in all my suggestions about foods and the quality of their current sugar free selections. They have NO choices for sugar free desserts at the BBQ at all when we went. I wont go into my suggestions, but I wanted to encourage all of you to take 5 minutes and go to the DCL official web site and find the contact us icon and use it. Tell them your suggestions, likes and dislikes you have encountered. They do listen to their guests. The more diabetics they hear from the better it will be for all of you on the cruise. I have seen many improvemnts the past 3 years that have come from the suggestions of the guests, so please speak up and let them know how you feel about this subject! Thankyou,

Guys this would be a great idea for Sandy on her thread about navigators. I am going to suggest it there.

I am also on an insulin pump (for 12 years). Where would I get a medical form? I didn't book directly with DCL but with Travelocity. Have never received anything from DCL, but show that we are booked on their website.

Thanks so much. I think I'll wait a few months before sending it in. I'd hate it to get lost in the ensuing months.
