Every year we try to have the kids make caramel apples at the halloween party. It's always more trouble that it's worth.

Any idea how to make it easier. We've used the type that goes in the microwave, expensive and time consuming. Then we melted caramels in a crockpot, worked fairly well, but caramel didn't stay thin enough, kept thinking up, anyway to keep it thin for a long time, we usually have around 40 to 45 kids.

Or maybe you have another idea of a fun treat for kids to make?

Buy the same stuff vendors at the fairs use, buy from a concession distribution company. Popcorn Supply Co. used to carry it, not sure haven't bought from them in a while. Good luck:goodvibes

Instead of making caramel apples make apples with caramel. Have wedges of apples that they can put in a bowl and then spoon the melted caramel that you keep in a crock pot over the slices and add toppings like sprinkles or nuts etc. Much Much easier and just as good and less waste.

forgot- if you want and we did it this way also just get the caramel ice cream topping in the squeeze bottle and squirt on the cut up apples if you don't want to make melted caramel

Instead of caramel can you dip them in melted chocolate and sprinkle on choc chips or sprinkles instead?

You can keep the caramel "liquid" by adding milk to the melted caramels. Just add a little at a time (a tablespoon) until it's the consistency you like. And, keep it REALLY hot.

You can also make the caramel apples ahead of time, and then at the party, have the kids drizzle melted CHOCOLATE over them. They can add sprinkles, candy bits, crushed oreos, etc. Sort of like Goofy's candy co. Melted chocolate is easier to deal with, and it hardens quickly.

that's what we did last year and it worked GREAT. So much less waste and the kids ate a lot more because it was easier to eat!

Not to hijack a thread, but what else do you do for your Halloween party? We're having one for the kids for the first time this year and I'm trying to come up with activities, food, etc. :wizard:

Well this is actually our Oct Pack meeting for cubscouts. But we have several games and we used to bob for apples, but with colds and the flu, we thought caramel apples would be better. So for the past three years we've been doing those.

I have to say, I looked on the Popcorn Company website and they have caramel and holders so the kids can take them home. I'm going to try it this year. Just have to use two crockpots and we'll see.

We play mostly cubscout games, but have a witches hat that you throw rings at, maybe a knock down game and play halloween music and a couldrin with dry ice. Nothing fancy. I know the party stores have halloween themed games and music, strobe lights...

That does help- thanks!

I have seen these at my local supermarket. Have not tried them, but they look easy. They are in a yellow package with a photo of an apple on the front. They are called Caramel Apple Wraps and are found near the apples in the produce section.

These don't taste quite as good (IMO) as when you use the regular Kraft caramels, but they definitely are easy. My kids like them almost as much as the regular kind.

And don't forget about popcorn balls....yummy. We made them a lot as a kid but no one makes them anymore. Candied apples are yummy too....mmmm, I love fall LOL
