That's a personal decision and there are pros & cons each side. The following is my OPINION only. You can agree or disagree.

Car Renting Pros:
Transportation on YOUR schedule. No waiting on busses, other stops, dealing with the masses, etc.

Car Renting Cons:
Cost
Getting into a hot car in the middle of the afternoon (yes, it will cool down, but it won't be cool like getting into an AC bus)
Paying attention to directions (although I find Disney roads VERY well marked, on a bus you don't have to worry about making a wrong turn)

Personally, I don't use a car once I get to Disney (even if we drove). I like being "immersed". Others would rather drive.

are long rides to parks a concern

Well, when you say "long rides" you may mean 'long waits". The ride to the park is no different in a bus or a car. But you can just get into your car and drive there, then park a mile away :) and walk or shuttle to the park (plus parking costs). The bus sometimes requires you to wait for the next bus, sometimes up to a 20 minute wait, as it's just like a city bus stop and buses to different places come though all day, but there have been many occasions where some buses don't show up for a while. If you are not in any hurry I suggest just taking the bus...it's easy.

No parking costs if you're staying on property.

We always rent a car. It's just far more convenient. If you get a good rate and you're staying long enough the cost per day is not bad.

To each their own but in 47 trips to WDW, some we had access to our own vehicle.... We've left it parked in the resort lot and always used Disney transportation...

We like being "immersed", no thoughts on driving, searching for the car, huge parking lots and the sea of brake lights leaving a park at closing....

Hop on the bus , boat or monorail and leave the driving to Disney, especially after a few drinks on property !!
