We have a 30 hour car trip ahead of us in a couple of
weeks. I was wondering what I can bring with me
(medicine/food/etc.) to eliminate any car sickness that
my children might get ?
thanks

chach,
Regarding medicine and children, you should always check with your pediatrician--even for over the counter medications.

Do you know if your children are prone to car sickness? Some things that help are looking out the windows at scenary--Do NOT have a child who is prone to car sickness watching videos or reading books! (Activities which have their head down and not looking out are the ones that will get them).

Another thing that helps is riding up front--but, do NOT do this if you have airbags up front and the child is too small. If you have a mini-van, a window seat as far forward as is safely possible.

Sometimes, bringing the temperature down a little bit--cool air helps with that nauseous feeling. Crack the window (if it isn't hot outside, of course).

Taking breaks and letting the kids stretch their legs a bit can help, too.

Avoid windy roads, if at all possible.

Good luck!

Check to see if your kids could take Dramamine or Benadryl. Both are good for motion sickness and a side effect that I don't mind is sleepiness! Sure makes the trip go faster for everyone.

I read somewhere that something in gingerale, has a calming affect on your stomach when traveling. I was looking up travel sickness tips too and this came up.

We had a 21 hour trip and brought cans of gingerale and snacks like crackers with us. Never opened the cans because we actually forgot we had them and my kids never felt sick. We stopped frequently, stretched, bathroom breaks and water was a must.

I think if they don't keep looking down for an extended period of time, that will definitely help.

As said above check with childrens Dr.

My Dd and I take Meclizine 25mg Chewable Tablets. My Dd's Dr. said it was ok for her to take it. Disney Cruises also carry it for their passengers.

I have suffered with motion sickness most of my life!! When I found Meclizine my life changed!! I could ride all the Disney rides. And even ride in a car thru curves and no get sick.

What I like about the Chewable Meclizine is if you start feeling icky you can take it and it will start working immedaitely!! Unlike Dramamine.

Dr. said, to take the Meclizine the night before traveling, then ever night before bed each night of the trip!
