OK Having 3 kids I probably should know the answer to this but don't Are children required to be in car seats in a cab? Not sure what the law is for the US but I would imagine on the islands this is not a requirement.Any city dwellers that can help me out? Anyone take an infant into a cab on the islands?

No, no car seats are required in cabs on any of the islands, to my knowledge. Which is actually a little SCARY to me, but that's the rule.

Enjoy!

Thanks Michelle--I was actually wondering the same thing. I think I'm going to pick up one of those "travel car seats" that fold up. I would just feel safer with it, and I don't want Trevor to get into a car and think he doesn't need to be in a carseat.

Thanks Michelle
I agree it is scary. However I was wondering if the fold up type would safice as I would hate to lug a big car seat. I do not want to compromise my chil's safety but I just couldn't see how they could get a car seat into an open air taxi like the ones we were in on St John.(before the baby)

forget the islands....where in the world is a car seat required in a taxi?...certainly not new york...or any other city i've ever been in...
how could they possibly make a requirement like that????
whether it's dangerous or not is another matter....but requiring them....

taxi strike (work stoppage) in cozumel 9/4

you'll be lucky to get cabs --- things don't seem to have erupted then ...

filthy cabs, no air ---
you'll never see a car seat there.

The cabs we rode in Cozumel didn't even have seat belts. In fact the speedometer(sp) was broken in both cabs we rode in. We were happy just to get back to the ship alive. I think driving there would be even scarier. Didn't seem to be a lot of traffic laws.

You must've missed California and Hawaii on your trips. Car seat law do apply to taxis in both states. I know someone who got a ticket for not having one for her child in CA. They were coming back from a vacation, picked up the taxi at airport and was stopped near their home. As for Hawaii, we vacationed there this summer, so I checked into it before the trip.

Actually, I think the car seat law applies to taxis everywhere. It's just not enforced everywhere.

I can't imagine requiring it in NYC or Boston... the taxis in both cities are outfitted with these bullet-proof partitions that take away from the passenger's leg room. Very uncomfortable. I can't imagine trying to stuff it in to that constricted space or that NYC drivers would tolerate the driver stopping that long.
