We haven't flown in awhile with a car seat due to ME, but this trip we will have a car and will need to bring our car seat, but don't want to bring it on the plane. Do the airlines still allow one to check a car seat for free (specifically AA)? If they do still allow this exception do you have to go through the "real" line or can this be done on the kiosk check in areas? Thanks for any help!!!!

I would only ever check a carseat at the gate. They are frequently lost and damaged. Case in point - we have taken 1 trip with an infant carseat/base. Put the base with our regular luggage & used the seat on the plane. The base didn't make it back to us for another day while the rest of our luggage came through just fine. Luckily this was on the home leg or I have no idea what would have happened! Actually if you can, use it on the plane so that you're in control of it the entire time.

We have checked the grand kids carseats at least 20 times now over the past 5 years and all arrive safe and sound. I think SW might be the only one that counts a carseat towards your luggage allowance (but that may have changed since I checked). Since they allow 2 pieces of free luggage per person, it was not an issue for us. We did invest in a carseat bag which keeps the carseat contained. I think we picked one up at Walmart for around $20. Well worth the price as it's made many trips.

We have a car seat bag that we have used in the past to drag the seat through the airport. I was just hoping to not have to drag it through the airport this time since my daughter is big enough to sit in the plane seat but still needs a car seat in a car. For those who have checked it in at the kiosk what was the procedure? When using kiosks in the past I have only seen the normal luggage options where you have to pay.

Thank you for the answers so far!!!!
