Earpie: no car seats are required; in fact, if you wanted to let your infant ride on the roof, I doubt anyone would object. They're awfully laissez-faire down there. (We went with our 2 year old a few years ago, and out of necessity she had to ride in mommy's lap. We made the poor driver go about 5 MPH the whole way to Atlantis; I think we cost him an extra fare, but we did tip well.)

Thats plain irresponsible! The trunk is much more secure and protected from the rain!
Seriously...I don't think you'll have an issue.

Wow, your taxi driver would only let you strap the kid to the trunk!! We saw some trying to hang onto the antenna...

In reality though, there are ABSOLUTELY no car seat laws anywhere in the Caribbean. Even trying to find a cab with seat belts can sometimes be a challenge. You'll be expected to ride in the back and hold onto your child.

In St. Thomas we were picked up by a mini van taxi and I was able to lift my umbrella stroller with DS16mos still strapped in right into the taxi; it had seat belts so I buckled up & held onto the stroller for the short ride back to the ship. For the ride there he rode on my lap. Not perfect but it was either that or don't leave the ship.

When we went cruising with 1yo DS, we opted out of taking ANY transportation off of the ship. He had just started using a forward facing car seat and we just decided that it wasn't worth the risk since there is no practical means of taking a car seat on an excursion.

This year, DS will be over 2.5yo and we're just warming up to the idea of allowing him to take SHORT rides to share excursions with us.
