Car Seat recommendations for a large infant?

We are replacing our infant seat this weekend for our 5 month old DS since he has outgrown it. He currently weighs about 20 lbs. and is 27 or so inches long. He is a SOLID baby. I am very confused at what car seat to get, because obviously we would like to get one that will continue to accomodate him as he grows. We have an Alpha Omega for our one car (which is fine) but it doesn't fit very well in our commute car (Toyota Corolla). Any recommedations for a good seat for a larger baby that will also fit well in a small car :confused3

Since he still has to be rear facing for a while, I would say that I loved my Britax roundabout for that age.

One step up from the Britax Roundabout is the Britax Marathon - same as the Roundabout but offers more length for taller babies. We got this one a few years ago for our long son, and he used it until recently when we took it for his sister and upgraded him to an even bigger Britax. I have loved our Marathon!! We used it for two years in a Camry, which is a touch bigger than a Corola, but still had no problems.

My DS was a big baby too. We switched him to a Graco ComfortSport at about 5 months. It fits nicely in my Hyundai Elantra, it was reasonably priced, and it's still roomy and comfortable looking now that he's almost 2. :thumbsup2

Maybe since your child is still young, I would try the Britax Decathlon. It still has padding to support him but this car seat goes up to 33lbs rear facing, and then forward up to 65lbs! :woohoo:

I would go either with the Britax Marathon or Decathlon. The Decathlon has the padding for the baby, but I really like the latch a lot better in the Marathon. DD is 4, almost 38 lbs, and still in her Marathon (with room to grow), so definetly it lasts a long time, since it goes up to 35 lbs.

we own a Britax marathon, decathalon and roundabout

Britax is awesome!

the decathalon is tallestof the 3 and has the largest amount of weight it goes to both forward and rear facing.

Dont worry to much about your sweet baby growing out of another seat. with crawling and walking your babe will slim down

We used a Britax Roundabout for DS after he outgrew his infant seat and now he is in a Marathon. I LOVE Britax seats. The Marathon goes up to 65 pounds so he will be in it for a long time to come!

We are a Britax family as well. I have only dealt w/the Roundabout but in my opinion - anything Britax is awesome!!! Good luck!

Britax are great seats, so don't misunderstand me here... I own a Boulevard and love it. But at 5mos and already 20lbs, you might want to get another Cosco, I recommend the Scenera with the 5-pt harness (NOT the Overhead Shield). It will probably fit better in your smaller car than the AO and is less costly than the AO seats as well at only about $40-50 (I think Walmart has it on sale right now, btw). The really great thing about this seat is that it has a 35lb r/fing weight limit so you will be able to keep your kiddo r/fing longer in it (The AAP recommends keeping kiddo's r/fing as long as their seat will allow.) The Scenera is also a much better seat to travel with than the AO because it's lighter and a little less bulky.

Btw, you can remove the base of your AO and it might fit better in your smaller car that way. It doesn't have to have the base on it....I actually got a better install with mine without the base too.

Then you could save up some money in the meantime and when the Scenera is outgrown, you could either buy a Regent, or possibly the Radian80 (skjp.com) which is coming out on the market next month (so by then there should be more reviews of it so you'll have a better idea of what will work for you). Or you might want to just get a Marathon/Blvd or one of the other 65lbs limit seats at that time. There are more and more choices in car seats that harness past 40lbs coming out on the market it seems. I really recommend going to www.car-seat.org and reading the forums there.

hth!

Another vote for Britax (DD1 has a Decathlon). I didnt want to spend the money on it, but after many reviews I went with it. I LOVE IT!!! I used an Alpha Omega with my son and hated it (maybe theyre better now). Rear facing I couldnt access the release for the straps so I had to leave them tight (try that when in spring when temps are crazy and youre layering the kids). The straps kept twisting too. Dont have any of those problems with the Britax. Do try the fit (in the car and using your child) out at a local store, then order online. I saved money doing it that way (no tax, free shipping), plus got the pattern I wanted.

Unless you don't mind having your front passenger seat all the way forward, I would go with a Roundabout. The Marathon and Decathlon seats are really tall and will force any front passenger to have a seat close to the dashboard.

Not to steal this thread topic, but as anyone tried the C1 Travel System -
by Chicco? I went to their site and it seems like it's so easy to use!
I so want to buy my Britax, but think I should get a infant seat too. And I do like Chicco(seems most similair to the Pilko i love) with less money. So thinking of getting thier infant seat for the first few months for easy access in and out of the car.
Any ideas?

another thought and question:
Also help me to understand the differences with the Britax. I was sure sure i wanted the Decathlon, but now hearing you talk about other kinds, I'm getting confused. What's the difference with the Boulevard? I think I'm seeing padding for infants as well as higher pads for the toddlers, right? That's why it's the most expensive?
THe Roundabout, only goes to 33 lbs? And not all the padding.
THe Marathon is the the next step up after roudabout, because more weight, but again no "extra" padding.
I'm aware that it may be better to get the less expensive one and buying padding seperate, that's why/what i'm trying to figure out.
Whew my head is spinning! :headache:

what about a Graco SafeSeat? Those are rear facing infant seats and go much higher in weight for babies.

I really like the convenience and safety of a smaller seat for babies.

I have a Britax Marathon that DS graduated to at 5 months old because he already exceeded the height limit for his SnugRide. I love that seat! My DH has the Evenflo Triumph 5 seat and it is also very nice and less expensive than the Britax. I think it might fit in a smaller car a little better, too. If you can put the carseat in the middle of the backseat, sometimes that gives it more room. Good luck with your choice!

My dd 6 months is 19 lbs. 28 inches! We think she'll be 6 feet tall. Anyhow, I chose the Britax Roundabout, and she just loves it. My friend has two for her twins, who can still use it at age 4 1/2. They are barely switching to boosters and they are tall girls also. It is pricey, but worth it!

“Marathon- The most basic model of the three. It harnesses to 65 lbs, rf 5 to 33 lbs. It has a rf tether, ff and rf lockoffs. Has the lever style harness adjuster, 4 harness heights, and the crotch strap does not adjust. It is very padded and comfy just like all the britax seats, and has about a million cover choices. Will last till the child is ready for a booster most likely. Good for children that need to rf still (under 33 lbs).

Decathlon- Harnesses to 65 lbs rf 5 to 33 lbs. Has rf tether, ff and rf lockoffs. The ff lockoffs may damage seatbelts. It has a push button style harness adjuster, 4 harness heights (rumor is they may be a little taller than the ma/bv), and a three position crotch strap that gives 1 more inch of room as compared to the marathon and boulevard. It has infant inserts so is great for a small baby. It also has a removeable toddler head pillow. It has more limited cover choices than a marathon. Will last till child is most likely ready for a booster. Good for very small babies because of the infant insert but a ma/bv may be a better choice for an older child that won't need the infant insert.

Boulevard- Harness to 65 lbs, rf 5 to 33 lbs. Has rf tether, ff and rf lockoffs. It has true side impact protection (the "wings"). Has a lever style harness adjuster, and instead of having to remove the seat from the car to adjust the harness height you just turn a knob on the side of the seat, and it does not have an adjustable crotch strap. It has a removeable infant pillow so is also a good choice for a very small baby. Will last till the child is most likely ready for a booster. Good seat for any child. Especially one that will have to be on the side of a vehicle without side curtain airbags.”

THe Roundabout, only goes to 33 lbs? And not all the padding.

The Roundabout only goes to 40lbs, it rear-faces to 33lbs. The Cosco Scenera 5-pt I mentioned earlier r/f's to 35lbs and doesn't have all that much padding - but honestly, babies don't seem to mind! For a lot less money you get two extra r/fing lbs, which can mean a lot for a bigger baby, and then once that seat is outgrown you can move your child into a larger seat like the MA/BV or a Britax Regent (f/fing only to 80lbs).

THe Marathon is the the next step up after roudabout, because more weight, but again no "extra" padding.
I'm aware that it may be better to get the less expensive one and buying padding seperate, that's why/what i'm trying to figure out.

Honestly if you're going to go to the expense of buying a Britax seat, then spend a little extra on the MA/DC/BV seats instead -- you'll get 25 extra pounds and MUCH taller top harness slots which will make the seat last a whole lot longer. The RA does have a shorter back but keep in mind that only newborns need a 45 degree angle. Once infants get stronger and have decent head and neck control their seat can safely be installed at a more upright angle which will give the front passenger and/or driver more space as well.

hth.

Oh and remember car seats are also outgrown by height in f/fing mode once the tops of the child's shoulders are past the top harness slots. Since some kids have short torso's and some longer torso's their overall height may vary so height limits posted in car seat manuals are really just an approximation. Weight limits, on the other hand, are set in stone and should be followed strictly.

R/fing car seats are outgrown by height once the child's head is within one inch of the top of the car seat shell. Legs and/or feet touching the back of the seat is not a safety issue.

The staps should be below the child's shoulders in r/fing mode and above in f/fing mode.

Currently DD 2 mo is in a Graco SnugRide but once she outgrows that, we plan on getting the Britax Marathon. I've heard nothing but rave reviews about Britax so that's what we're going with.
