Everyone in this thread is so helpful, and I am sure someone has answers/suggestions. :) My friend is taking a cruise, and has a 3 year old. Her dilemma is that she is worried about lugging a car seat around when she goes to ports. Are there car seats in taxis in ports in the Caribbean? Does anyone have a suggestion to make lugging it around less cumbersome? Any tips are welcome! :) TIA

There are no car seat laws in most ports. And not all vehicles will have the necessary seat belts to attach a car seat.

Yep.

If I had a little kid and I was going to those ports AND I wanted to take an excursion or a cab or something, I would just have to channel my inner "I was born at the end of the 60s" self and just hang on to the kidlet.

I'm not even sure the nice shuttle van for the DCL Graycliff chocolate factory tour had seatbelts of any kind, and you definitely could not fit a carseat in there.

Yeah....right.... I mean we traveled from New York to California in a station wagon "back in the day". My sisters and & were "seated" on top of the foot lockers we were hauling in the back (had to put the seats down to accommodate those). And we all made it to CA.

Not saying that car seats aren't necessary, but a lot of us survived not having them.

Some ports like St. Thomas have open air taxis like these.....

Caribbean ports are very lax when it comes to seatbelts and carseats.

i don't remember a single excursion we went on that had seat belts....not one...
not the taxis, not the vans, not the buses ,and then of course, several of our excursions involved boarding a smaller boat right at the port..

Physics don't change in different countries :) Maybe look into excursions that don't require transportation? Also, how are they getting to port? She will need the seat to get to the port at least.
