My son is 2 years old..this will be his first flight. It will be about 1 1/2 hrs long. Do we need to bring a car seat for him. I think he will be fine in the seat with out his CS but I wanted to check with experienced others. He's 36" tall and about 30 lbs.

We also have a portable DVD player..can we bring that on the plane??

Thanks guys!!

I would bring it on board for safety and convenience. He will probably be more comfortable in his car seat since it is familiar to him. It will also keep him more secure during take-offs, landings and everything in between.

You can bring the portable DVD on the plane but you might not be able to use it during takeoff and landing.

Have a great trip!

Depends on how you feel. I've never flown with my dd in a carseat. Mind you, she only flew when she was under 2 once. The other flights she's been over two, and able to fit comfortably in a seat with a seatbelt. If you feel that your little one will sit still and remain with the seatbelt on (except for potty breaks), go for it.

My DD is 3 and has always flown with a carseat. We are again taking her carseat in October. I just feel safer and she knows she has to stay in it. No running around on the plane.

It is worth checking with the airline if they have their own seats for this. We are flying in January and Virgin actually have a carseat-type chair that fits on a plane seat. We will be using this for my DS1. Just thought it might be worth checking out.

We did use our car seat for our 2 1/2 year old and she loved being up tall near the window to see out it.

The dvd will be your lifesaver!! Just dont forget the ear phones. (Hopefully you little one will use them) We even bought a splitter so two people could watch the DVD together. One thing we noticed is you have to turn up the volumn a lot because of the engine noise in the plane.

Don't forget that you will likely need a car seat when you hit your destination (required by law), so it may be just as easy to bring your own on the plane and then install in vehicle when you get there. At least you will know how it is supposed to be installed.

Just a thought!

While your child sounds big enough to not need it, I would question if your child is mature enough. The seatbelts are easy to get out of and the lest thing you want is the be chasing your child who is climbing all over the place to get free.

If you use the carseat, it needs ot be with the harness. Boosters that simply position the seatbelt are not approved for airline flight. Bring the seat to the plane. If you don't use it you can always have them toss it under the plane ("gate check it").

I would definitely bring the CS and the DVD player. Like the pp said, the CS will be a familiar and comfortable place for your ds, plus you'll have the added benefit of the extra safety it provides. If you're taking a car from the airport, you will want him in a car seat anyway. Also, I would think a 2 yr old would still be too small for the airline lap belt to fit across his hips properly. Plus they are very easy to unbuckle. Just something to think about!

::yes::

We always bring the carseat and my son is 4 and we will be using it again next month. One thing I have noticed is that my son will fall asleep in his seat just like he does in the car and I am quite certain that wouldn't happen without the carseat. Just makes my life easier on a 4+ hour flight.

We took a flight recently and I was told by the airline that in order to bring a car seat on the plane it had to be FAA approved. So, I looked on my childs car seat and it didn't state that it was so, my 2yr old just sat in the seat. I was not going to buy another car seat just to fly. I would recommend buying a car seat cover for it if you are going to check them in as baggage. I purchased the bags just because I didn't want them to get dirty. You wouldn't believe how dirty the bags were when we got them from baggage claim. I am so glad I got them. Good luck!

Do the airlines have certain "guidelines" concerning what age/size a child should be before sitting in the "regular" seat without a carseat? Are they required to use the "regular" seat at a certain age/size? Anyone know?

Our DD was almost 4 and very tall for her age, and we were not told she shouldn't use her seat. We like it because she knows that once she is in it, she stays sitting until we arrive. We do potty breaks before leaving (just like a car trip) and the only challenge we had was she couldn't put her tray down, not enough room. Oh - and she was capable of putting her feet on the back of the seat in front of her - last time we were able to stop it quickly, the older she is and the more she tests the more frustrating that will be...

For US domestic flights, the size weight recommendation is not set by the airlines, it is set by the FAA. Their recommendation is that a child who weighs under 40 lbs. should use an approved CRS (Child Restraint Device, aka carseat) when on a commercial airliner. It is not *required* by gov't regulation, but it is suggested for the sake of safety, especially in turbulence conditions.

US-based carriers DO NOT provide carseat equivalents for use aboard aircraft; their liability insurance does not allow it. If you want a CRS for your child to use on the aircraft, you must provide it yourself, and it must be a seat with an integral upper-body harness. Seats that lack an upper-body harness will not be approved for aircraft use.

FYI: I have heard reports lately that some US carriers are now mandating that *if* a separate seat is purchased for a child under age 2, that a carseat must be used in that seat. Those airlines that do have this policy are apparently not invoking this rule for children over age 2. The imposition of the rule appears to be a bit spotty, but from what I've heard, Delta is the carrier most likely to insist.

There has been some confusion here lately about the "FAA sticker" that has to be on a US-sold carseat. While the sticker's presence is mandated by the FAA, the text on the sticker does not actually say "FAA approved". However, the wording has been mandated by law since 1985. There must be two labels, actually, one that says "(1) “This child restraint system conforms to all applicable Federal motor vehicle safety standards” and another that says "(2) “THIS RESTRAINT IS CERTIFIED FOR USE IN MOTOR VEHICLES AND AIRCRAFT” in red lettering."

If the seat was purchased outside the US, it will be acceptable if it "bear either a label showing approval of a foreign government or a label showing that the seat was manufactured under the standards of the United Nations."

You can read the US standards for yourself by going to the webpage for the Code of Federal Regulations. The section of the law that cover the use of carseats on aircraft is: 14 CFR 121 (http://ecfr.gpoaccess.gov/cgi/t/tex...view=text&node=14:2.0.1.4.19.11.10.9&idno=14.

NOTE that that regulation says that a booster seat may not be used on board an aircraft. It is *very* important to note that what the FAA defines as a booster seat is NOT necessarily what the mfr. of the seat might define as a booster seat. The exact description of what the FAA considers to be a booster seat may be found at 49 CFR 571.213. If a seat is convertible for use with and without an upper-body harness, there will be a caveat on the "certified for use" sticker, that caveat will specify that the certification is only valid when the upper-body harness is properly installed in the seat.

I went last Sept with my MIL, her mom , my SIL, DS2 and DD2. They are 11 months apart and it was the time between their birthdays. My older one (son) did absolutely fine without the ccarseat. I wanted to take my dd's on the way but was talked into checking it. BIG mistake. She stays in her carseat with no problems but that seat belt is SOOOO simple to open that it is all she wanted to do. I had to fight with her several times about it and it was a pain. On the way home, she sat in the carseat and I didn';t have any problems out of her at all. I would recommend taking it even though it is a pain to carry!!

We brought an Alpha Omega car seat and it was convenient to keep our little wiggle worm in one place. It was a pain in the butt to lug the seat around though. He is now three and we are skipping it and opting to have the towncar service provide one for the ride to All Star Music.

Best,
Amy

as for the lugging of the car seat....

I use a bungee cord and tie it to the stroller or we buy a cart for $2-3 at the airport and attach it to that. It keeps more hands free too.
