We are now thinking of flying to Florida and renting a car, however I will need a carseat for my 20 month old. I do no need the carseat on the plane as we are not buying her a seat.

Has anyone ever checked a carseat as luggage? Was it ok?

I checked 2 car seats on my last trip and had no trouble. They gave me a bag to put them in and everything. I had no damage to either seat and it was a lot better than paying to rent to car seats from the care rental!

If you are going to check it as luggage Gate check it. That way hopefully it will end up on the top of the luggage. Be aware that it could sustain damage that is hidden from view(making it unsafe).

We have always gate checked, especially because even though we had not purchased a ticket, if the flight was not full they would allow us a seat for our little one and he rode much better in his seat. If no room we just gate checked it. When I would fly by myself I would bungy cord his seat to the stroller, this worked with our but may not with all, and would put him in it. Then i would just push the whole thing. I did have to undo it when gate checked.

I've done it both ways many, many times and it has been ok. Just take a bag to put it in because the only problem was one time I forgot a bag and the airport was out and I had to check it without a bag and it got wet and then dirty from the cargo hold.
