My son is 2.5 and 35 lbs. He is in a Britax Roundabout. With winter coming I know the straps will not buckle with his winter gear on. My DH adjusted the straps but they are still a tight fit now wearing summer clothes. What other option do I have for a seat? My 4.5 yo is in a Graco booster but he is too small for that. Will I have the strap problem with other seats too?

Where are her shoulders in relation to the top slots of the harness? If they are over the top harness slots, then she needs out of the seat asap. Also, if the tips of her ears at the top of the seat, she has outgrown it. FWIW, you should not put your baby in the seat with a big winter coat on. During a crash the coat will compress and the harness will be loose!

There are some choices, but it really depends on your child's torso height. You are right, your child is way too young for a booster. 4 year AND 40 lbs is the absolute minimum recommendation for a booster.

When my ds was getting close to the weight limit for his roundabout, I researched extensively for a seat that had a 5 pt harness that would handle more than 40 lbs. I ended up getting a Britax Husky (which is now the Britax Regent) that can be used up to 80 lbs. The trade-off was that this seat does NOT convert into a booster. However, my kids have never given me a hard time about sitting in a 5 pt., so we used this seat past his 5th birthday and now his 6 year old sister uses it. She just got to 40 lbs and could probably stay in this seat until she's in high school!:rotfl:

Britax makes a few other seats that have a 5 pt. harness that can be used up to 65 and 80 lbs. and there are one or two other companies out there as well. Try looking at www.elitecarseats.com. Just be aware that many seats that convert from a 5 pt. harness to a booster are not meant to be used with the 5 pt. harness when the child is over 40 lbs.

We have our 4 year old DS in a Britax Regent & he loves it. It is comfortable for him & safe. I plan on keeping him in it as long as possible. He doesn't know any other way to ride in a car, other then ina 5 pt harness & I plan on keeping him that way as long as I can.

The previous poster is right about sizes if your child is outgrowing the seat.

Also I must agree, as much as a PITA it is, a child should not be in a car seat with heavy bulky coats on. It is just not safe. You can/should remove the coat before putting on the harness belts (I know it can be tough, but it is safety we are talking about) or look for a coat that provides the needed warmth, but it not very bulky.

My 4.5 year old is in a Britax Marathon. We love Britax carseats and our 6.5 year old just moved into a Britax booster (if it wasn't so late I could tell you the name of it!).... Best of luck! I've also heard/read about not buckling them in carseats w/ bulky coats on - put them on backwards after buckling if you need to (or carry a blanket in the car!)

Where I live you don't have much choice about kids wearing coats in their car seats....when it's -30C outside you don't make your kids strip off to get in the car! Maybe if I was one of those folks who runs the car for 15 mins before getting in I could...but that's just not good for the environment!

With my two, when they were in 5 point harnesses I selected their coats / snowsuits carefully to not be too bulky, and then tightened the straps once they were in so that the coat was already compressed. You have to tighten / loosen the straps everytime they get in & out, but so worth it for their safety.

If you buy a seat for a greater weight range, just make sure which weight range the starps are for. We have high back boosters that had 5 point to 40lbs & then 60 lbs with a seat belt. Just make sure that you are using them correctly, and within height limits too.

First, I agree that you don't want anything too fluffy between the harness straps and the child. Here is a link w/some information and links to safer winter wear (site owned by a CPST):

I don't know what else to suggest other than warming up the car first and having kids take their coats off before strapping in. If you live somewhere like the pp where the temps drop well below zero, then one of those automatic starters for the car might be something well worth investing in, espcecially if your vehicle has to be parked outside, or not in an attached garage.

Anyway on to car seats - If the top of your 3.5yr olds shoulders are past the top harness slots, or the tips of his ears are past the top of the shell, then he's outgrown his RA by height and needs a bigger seat. There are actually a few other options for keeping him in a 5pt harness quite a while longer. The Britax Regent is one - it has 20" top harness slots, 80lbs weight limit. Lasts most kids till 8, child probably will still need a booster in the car after this is outgrown, to get them to the point where they pass the 5 step test.

Britax also makes the Marathon/Decathlon & Boulevard which all go to 65lbs f/fing, the MA/DC have 17.5" top slots, the BV's are 17". There's also the Fisher Price Safe Voyage Deluxe (FPSVD) which is based on the MA/DC shell, same size seat, same harness height, but goes to 55lbs instead of 65 - its basically a dressed down version made for FP by Britax. They are discontinuing it due to low sales so you can pick one up for $130 now (may want to check w/the retailer on the Date of Mfgr if you want to make sure you'll get most of the 6yr lifespan out of it). You can pretty much only find these online now.

There is also the Sunshine Kids Radian65 which has 18" top slots. This seat does have install issues w/certain vehicles so it's best to try it out first if you can (and if you own a Toyota, I've read don't even bother because for some reason this seat almost always doesn't install well w/the seatbelt in these cars - fyi you can't use LATCH after the child weighs 40 or 48lbs depending on the car).

Another option might be the Cosco/Safety 1st Apex65, 65lbs weight limit, 17" top harness slots, boosters 40-100lbs. Makes an OK but awkward booster due to it's width. It also requires the support of a tall seatback or flat/adjustable headrest. It's outgrown by height when the tips of the childs ears go past the top of the vehicle seat. The Signature-Biltmore version here is selling for $80 and has EPP foam in the headrest (not all of them do).

hth!

My 4yo has an Apex and a Radian 65. He's 42# and 40" and will fit in those for at least another 2yrs height wise I'm guessing. My kids never wear anything thicker than fleece in the car. We are getting the 3 in 1 coats this year (they baby has hers already). It has a zip out fleece jacket that can be worn in the car and then a heavier coat they can either wear backwards in the car or just put on when they get out.

What everyone else has said; no coats in the car. Also for those who say it is too cold, I know techs in Alaska who do this and it is NOT too cold. You can get a fleece jacket somewhere like Lands End, put a heavy coat over it, get in the car and remove the heavy coat, and get in the seat.

A good test is to put your child in the seat with the coat on. Tighten the straps. Then, without loosening anything, take him out, remove the coat and put him back in. In a crash, this is how loose the straps would be. From here you can make the decision on if the coat is too thick or not.

With my two kids I made a heavy poncho out of fleece. I cut out two pieces of fleece in a rectangle and knotted them together like some of the fleece baby blankets and cut a hole in the middle. When I would put them in the car seat I would just lift the back over the seat and lift the front to put their harness on them. I would then tuck the front part around them and it would keep them warm.

That sounds like a poncho and there's a lady who actually turned this into a home-based business her site is www.carseatponcho.com :goodvibes
