We would like to rent a car for a few days during our stay - any advice? Also, would like to know the best way to get the best deal? Thanks to all:)

You don't say when you are going to WDW - sometimes that makes a difference in price. There are two locations on property to rent from - National and Alamo. I would suggest signing up for their e-mail specials, we just got one that will give us an economy car for $10 per day on weekends. We're going to be there at the end of this month. Plenty of places to choose from at the MCO Airport. If you don't mind getting a few extra e-mails, sign up for their specials, too. With the airport, comes extra fees. I recommend using DME and if you really need to, rent a car on property.

We rented a car for a couple of days. We used Hertz and they picked me up at my resort and brought me back. The "office" was at Shades of Green. Was relatively painless procedure and worked out well for what we wanted. www.mousesavers.com will provide discount codes to check and use. There are several other companies on the property that will do similar to what Hertz did. Others will give you the names of those companies and the exact locations. Good luck.

Actually renting at the airport is cheaper than the locations at Disney. I have been watching/pricing both options and have found the rates at the airport are a lot cheaper.

Another DIS person posted last week that a one day car rental at the Car Care center at Disney cost her $97 for one day

If you belong to Costco's or BJS check their web sites for discount codes and coupons.

There are also several other car rental locations located at some of the off-site hotels close to Downtown Disney. We usually rent from Dollar, which is located at the Regal Sun Resort, which is only a 5 minute walk, across the street from the DTD bus stop.

The only way I've ever done is to thru the airport, picking a company that is in the garage at the airport. And the only way I've gotten killer rates is to be diligent in checking codes (via this site or mousesavers) over multiple locations. For my experience, the non-airport locations seem to price out pretty much the same as the airport - even if they are $50 cheaper, it's worth $50 to me for convenience. But then, I'm all about convenience.

Also --- in my experience, I've had the rental agents try to "upsell" stuff to me at the counter - in particular an "upgrade"... "for just $7 per day!!"... NEVER, EVER take these. Nine times out of ten it's a cue that they don't have the car (econobox) that you've requested and you are going to end up with something else. I once got a Sebring Convertible for $17 a day. :cool1:

I have a one day rental booked in September. I will pick it up at the Regal Sun. Since we only need a people mover (no luggage) I booked a compact and my total including tax is $25.

Not always true. I just rented from National with p/u at the Dolphin and for my dates, it was cheaper than getting it from MCO. I was surprised but happy since I didn't want to do the drive back to the airport. DH was not on the trip. We were at the Boardwalk when I picked it up so I just walked over, very easy.

We were at VWL when I returned it, so we played mini golf first, took it back, then took the boat to Epcot, spent some time there, and just took the bus back to resort. Very simple and convenient.

We then used DME to get to and from the airport.

I agree with Sandisw. Just this week, I started looking at rental car rates for my December trip and found the MCO prices to be outrageous. I ended up renting a car from National at the Dolphin for the 4-5 days of my trip that I will need the car.

Thanks so much for everyone's feedback, and sorry for not clarifying properly. We will be staying onsite. It has been a bijillion years since I've rented a car - do you have to pay mileage on top of the rental rate?

Most if not all of the major car rental companies have unlimited mileage as part of their rental agreement. I have used National, Alamo and Hertz recently and they all include free mileage.

The only thing that you need to remember these days is to return the car with a full tank of gas.

I've been trying all kinds of codes from all websites with a variety of dates around our trip (Dec 16 - 30th) varying from 3 - 7 day rental and I'm finding them very expensive. Last week I used the mousesavers code for avis and it was higher than if I didn't (don't even ask) I used both the costco and walmart code today at Alamo for the and the best I could get was $86 per day for a compact without all the added charges. Am I doing something wrong or is it just the time of year we are going? Any help is appreciated!

The December rates seem to be outrageous. I ended up booking Dollar using the code from the Orlando Magic Card website. Orlando Magic Card You can get the card for free from the website and then also find the Dollar discount code on the website.

Does anyone know the hours of operation of the rental desks at the Dolphin? I'm looking to rent a car for 2 days in the begining of December (3rd and 4th)

They are only open 8AM to 4 PM according to the reservation confirmation that I had with them.

Try here:

You can find something from $106 per week. There is even a decent Thrifty rate (from $137 per week) over the Christmas week.
