We are arriving in Orlando two days prior to our booked reservations at the Poly. Our plan is to stay two days in Orlando to visit Universal and then to travel to WDW to begin our stay at the Poly. We have no hotel booked yet for those 2 days in Orlando. As far as transportation goes, anyone have any advice as to what would be the least expensive route to go (Airport to an Orlando hotel, Orlando hotel to Universal and then Universal to WDW)? Would renting a car be more economical than taking shuttles? We have the Magical Express option in our package so that's how we will be going back to the airport. Thanks - dates of visit 4/12-4/20.

While I've never rented a car in Orlando before, I would think that renting a car at the airport, using it to get to Universal and then to WDW, and then turning it in at WDW would be your best bet. You can come and go as you want, when you want. You can turn the car in at the Car Care Center and they will take you to the resort. So, you go check-in at your WDW resort, then one person drives back to the Center and drops the car off and they drive you back to the resort.
