I looked at Costco Travel and directly on some rental sites and am finding that renting an extra day (11 days, Wednesday through Sunday versus 10 days, Thursday through Sunday) for our March trip is $400 cheaper. If you have some flexibility, this may be worth considering. I always knew a day could make a significant difference in the cost of flights when multiplying by the number in my travel party, but didn’t realize adding a day could save this much on a car rental.

Check out AutoSlash...

We used them for a month-long rental on O'ahu two years ago and have booked with them again for February / March 2022. There's a huge savings when you do not pickup and return your rental at the airport. Price your rental both ways...airport pickup and pickup in the city.

Sometimes even =/- an hour or two difference saves a bunch of money. I always try lots of different combos before booking and always try to remain flexible. These days a rental car is a significant expense.

Be careful if you intend to return the rental car prior to the last day of the rental agreement. The rate sometimes get adjusted based on the actual length of rental. It might seem like you are doing them a favor by returning the car early so it can be rented to someone else. But, that's not how the car rental companies see it.
