Hello,

We (me, DH, DS9 and DS6) are flying into LAX on March 27th for a 5 night stay. We plan to travel to Universal one day. I have tried looking up the best way to get from LAX to PPH hotel and back and also to Universal. I think the cheapest and best way is going to be to rent a car.

Does anyone have any suggestions on a reliable car rental company. Also are there any tolls I need to factor in for the trip?:scratchin

TIA

California generally does not have tolls on any roads.

As far as companies, stick with the major ones (Budget, Avis, National, Hertz, Alamo). Check the travel sites like Orbitz or Travelocity and it will bring up a grid of choices.

If you belong to Costco, they have an excellent travel site (costcotravel.com) that can be helpful in finding good discounts.

The answer to this question is already on the boards. You can either go back and scroll through say the first 5 pages of threads and just look for the ones that refer to rental cars or you can use the search feature on the first page of the forums- both methods work great!

There are an increasing number of toll roads in California, including Orange County. The ones in Orange County were built and and operated either privately or as public/private partnerships. To my knowledge, they all have cash lanes. I doubt that the OP is going to be using them, but just in case I don't think any toll tag is required.

I happen to live in an area with several toll bridges, but there aren't many in Southern California. Around here we've got "express lanes" which are carpool lanes where those with toll tags can use them as single occupancy vehicles. They've even got variable pricing.

While this may be true I would guess that 95% of the questions askes on this board have already been asked and answered. OP may want more up to date information. If you find it bothersome to answer question this probably isn't the best place to spend your time.:confused3

We have started to become rather loyal to National, so I would recommend joining their Emerald Club and booking mid-size cars (that way you get access to the Emerald Aisle, where you choose your car from a selection that quite often includes vehicles far above "mid-size").

With LAX all the rental agencies are offsite, and involve a shuttle ride over to the particular rental place. The terminals are well signed for where to wait for what shuttle.

I don't remember the route from LAX to Disney, but it was fairly simple especially if you have something like an ipad and navigator in the car with you. :)

If you don't need the car in the middle of your stay and don't want to pay for parking, you can book the car as a one-way rental, and drop it off (I recommend) at the Alamo/National (assuming you booked Alamo or National!) location next to Alpine Inn on Katella. They have a shuttle to take you back to your hotel (and pick you up, I assume) that was very helpful.

But you have to do the figuring to see if keeping it the whole time and paying for parking is better or worse than a couple short-term rentals. :)

Even though they are usually WDW-centric, there are always loads of car rental threads on the Transportation forum. That way you can keep track of codes and coupons for various rental companies. I like mousesavers.com to keep track of those things, too. And remember that rental companies change their rates ALL the time! Our trip to Orlando is 12 days out and I fully expect that rates are going to change inside a week. (knock wood) I have my records from previous trips and I often change my rental codes/coupons just a week out. So don't look at things once and decide it's too much, etc. It can change. But you have to check and recheck often. :)

Since there are very recent threads and posts about this subject, instead of waiting for someone to answer their question I was just letting OP know how to find their info faster. Maybe you should try posting helpful information instead of snipping at me?

Actually I did search the boards and I do read the "new" threads each day and had not seen this specific question asked. Most of the transportation questions deal with shuttles not car rentals.

Thanks to those of you who have posted helpful information!!
