DH and I are going to rent a car when we head to Charlotte in a few weeks. Where can I get discount codes or the best deal on a rental for 3 days? We are thinking of getting a mid sized or compact for the days we are there.

Also, i thought i had read that it's better to use a credit card rather than a debit card when renting a card. Mentioned it to DH and he got all hot and bothered by the idea as we don't use credit cards. Clearly i would prefer not to but if they are going to 'hold' $500 for the days i have the car i would rather use the credit card this ONE time,

Any advice and guidance is appreciated. can you tell we have never had to rent a car?! :)

thanks
Lara

I've had much better success with dealing with Priceline or Hotwire than with coupons/codes. Another advantage of those two is that they only deal with companies INSIDE MCO, so no wasted time shuttling around. Most often you are better off using a credit card since they will cover your CDW.

Several things to consider
Call your car insurance company and check you coverage for rental cars while on vacation - most will not cover damage, but your liability travels with you
Call your credit card company and find out what kind of coverage they offer for rental cars - some will cover damage, but only if you do not select the damage waiver
I have found that I get the best price through Costco - more than enough to pay for the membership, but price shop...I have never rented through expedia, etc.

Let me say one thing about damage waiver: it is very expensive, but covers damage to the vehicle. Depending upon the exact policy (make sure you know what you are buying if you decide to do so), you walk away from any damage. If you decide NOT to purchase the damage waiver, make sure that any damage already on the car is clearly written on the contract including scratches, etc. Most rental companies require that you pay your deductible directly to them upon returning a car with any damage (Anyone carry $1000 with them?)
Personally, I do not purchase any of the other coverages offered. I sometimes purchase the damage waiver.
