Is there a best time to reserve a rental car? As in, 6 months out or 2 months out? My family is considering staying off site next April/May, and we would only do so with a rental. But when I have been checking, rates are not cheap!

Am I looking to far ahead?

Find one using your codes from Costco, AAA, AARP, entertainment books etc. do not use a pay now so you can cancel the reservation later as better prices May come out. I find 6 weeks out are my highest and 3 weeks out are the best rates. But, I always grab something in case rates go up.

It can get discouraging watching the rates sometimes.

I always book my rental way out. I also check my rental there after daily with different coupons from costco, bj's and the like. Typically you do not put a deposit on a rental at booking so I usually have multiple rentals going and I go with the one that has the best price the day of the trip. Having said that, we seem to almost always end up going with Alamo. In 1.5 weeks when we go we don't even need to use the kiosk, we just go right to the lot and pick out our car. Can't get easier than that.
