I haven't rented a car in a few years but when I have been searching for our upcoming trip in May it is listing it as $525 for May 7-14, what the heck is going on?

Who is the rental with and are you using any sort of discount or code. Check out mousesavers.com and carrentalsavers.com. Both have current promotions that you can use.

Also, be sure to check the car rental website often (I check daily) and see if the price drops. I've found that it will drop dramatically around the 21-14 days out mark.

Unfortunately car rental rates have increased dramatically over the past few years. We head down to Orlando in May each year and have seen a steady increase in the base rates each year.

As IbeAbitGOOFY mentioned, check out Mousesavers for contract codes and discount coupons. There are tons of contract codes floating around out there, but you need to make sure you are actually eligible to use a particular contract code as to get the rate you may be required to produce evidence you are affiliated with them (eg. a government or university contract code may give you a better rate than the one you are currently using, however, if you don't work for that employer you can't use that code without ID)

We have a mid-size rate from National for $175 per week (including taxes and fees) for 5/8 through 5/22, using the AARP code and $30 coupon. I think Alamo was even cheaper, but we have Executive at National, so we get a full size for that price. -- Suzanne

I made a MINI VAN rental for 5/6-5/13 for base rate of $319, total $410.61. I used rentalcarmomma.com. I was very happy with that rate after hearing other peoples prices.

Used a code I saw on rentalcarmomma.com and got a compact from Thrifty for May 15 - 22 for $194.52 total. Best I have found so far.

I booked through Alamo-from May 14-May 25 (11 days) I booked a standard car for $256 including taxes (I think it was $106/week). I used my Insiders discount and a double upgrade coupon from the Entainment book. I think this is a great deal but will still look for an even better one!

I think I may just look into that one. Thanks!

If you work for a large corporation, check your employee website for discounts. I got a great rate on a recent trip to Tampa using our company code (and it is allowed for personal travel so was not anything deceptive). I priced it out with and without the company code and it was about 50% off. This was at Nat'l.

This will make you choke on your pudding.....

Just for grins, I checked this:

Saturday Feb 26 - Thursday March 3, National, midsize, $628
Saturday Feb 5 - Thursday Feb 10, National, midsize, $125

Holy Macaroni Batman!!!!

You can get some great rates in May through Enterprise at http://www.carrentalsavers.com

If you book for more than seven days e.g.7 days and one hour, rates start at $88 per week for an economy, up to $162 for a fullsize. Works for both the 7th - 14th and 15th - 22nd, just make sure you have greater than 7 days and not an exact time rental e.g. 2pm to 2pm.

I'm flying into Sanford so it is higher there, but this saved me $10 and got a full size car and not a compact! Thanks!

Try going to priceline, they compare prices for you so you'll know which corporation is cheapest. Then goggle for a coupon from the cheapest rental place, and rent though that company's website. Also check rates they are constantly changing! We are going to Orlando over Memorial Day and the rate has gone down $200 from when I first booked, so keep an eye on it!

In a way it's a shame they make you go thru all these hoops just to get a decent price for a rental car..

Going May 7-17, Alamo for right now - $250.xx for a midsize. Pretty happy with that. Hoping it'll go lower as we had it for late May last year, 9 days, for $190 for a standard.
