Car rental - help please - panicking!

Hi all,
We are going to CA in early Aug. and need a car rental. We hope to pick up in LA and drop off in San Francisco. We found a few places but the rates have gone up $200 since we last looked. Can anyone tell me a great car rental place with good rates? Or - does anyone know any great car rental web sites which have deals or special codes so we can save some money?
I appreciate all your help. We are beginning to panic and hope you guys can help - did not realize that CA could be so expensive!

Have you tried Hotwire.com?

I usually find really great rates there.

I booked our car rental (not for California, but for our Maui trip in August) through Hertz. Go to their Specials tab and they will have e-coupons with special codes. I also combined that with a CAA discount; but in order to do that, I called the Hertz 1-800 number. I didn't book online. My 8-day rental in Maui (which is probably equally as expensive as California) was $279 for a Toyota Camry. (Before discounts, we would have to pay $399.) Hope this helps!

For how many days,,,,,and are you dropping the car at SFO airport or at a downtown city location?

I think we require a van from Aug. 3rd to Aug. 18th.
P/u and return both at airports.
