Car rental for christmas, just talked to a dollar rep...

I booked back in june a suv from dec. 28th to jan.7th for $312.00 tax included,
i wanted to change my dates from dec. 30th to jan. 9th same # of days and same time. Everytime i checked the car rentals the rate are 3x what i original booked. I called dollar and explain i just needed to move my dates two days forward and dollar told me if i move my dates the rates will be $1100 plus tax.
I begged and begged and even told dollar i am a faithful dollar renter and could i please change my dates and keep my rate. Dollar said "NO".

I asked why were they rates so high, dollar said because of New Years eve/day and they just bought all new vehicals and they need to charge more to cover the expense. Now wether that is true or not, I am not renting a car for $1100 plus tax, i will rely on the DME along with the other million people

Has anyone else have any luck with rates ?

We're using DME now all the time .
We will pick-up a car at one of the DTD location or CCC whatever is the cheapest. This also allows us to cut a day or so off the rental.

But yes the rates around that time are crazy.

when we started looking for Dec18-22 were over $400 for a fullsize. I found a Dollar at DTD for $175 for the same times.The code is MCOS01 if you want to look it up.

I just pulled the 30th -9th and got this for a minivan

1 Week at $349.49 per week. Unlimited mileage. 3 Extra Days at $56.00 per day.

Hi I also had a REALLY good rate with DOLLAR for 2/15-2/26 (I had made the Res. in August). I also tried to MODIFY it, by hours on the 15th and returning on the 25th.First I tried online and then I called. NO, they said I would actually be making a NEW Res. at over DOUBLE the price. Cannot be modified(SO why do they have MODIFY on their site??) Anyway I told them FORGET it I would be renting from another company. LUCKILY I had another Res. I had also made in August with THRIFTY(YES you need to take a shuttle) but they modified my Res. no problem! And they were $30. CHEAPER than Dollar to begin with. I call this GREAT CUSTOMER SERVICE! And will also be renting from THRIFTY in December!! Joan

All of the rental agencies bounce their prices up and down through the year. I got a great rate from Thrifty for MouseFest (Dec 6-11), but then I wanted to add an extra day and the rates had gone way up. But I kept checking every few days, and this week the rates dropped again at Thrifty, and I was able to add the extra day with an increase of only $6.

The best way to get the best rate is to keep checking ALL of the agencies about once a week. Try with every code and coupon combination you can come up with (for the last 4 years running I have gotten the best deal with Sams Club codes), and keep checking even after you book - sometimes you will save even more.

I have rented from Thrifty in the past and been perfectly pleased with the car and the service. But I will keep checking, and if an on-site agency comes down to be comparable to Thrifty I will change my ressie.
