If I book a rental at a good rate, can I add a 2nd driver later without losing my original (good) rate? I have never rented before.

I've never heard of a company forcing you to rebook just for adding a second driver. However, sometimes the second driver fee is high enough to turn a great rate into a bad one.

I would rather not have to pay the 2nd driver option, but DH insists he isn't doing all the driving for 12 days :rolleyes1

You will be able to add the extra driver when you check in and it will not affect your rate, but as another poster mentioned it will cost you. I think we paid $10/day for an additional driver last time. I am usually the one that runs out for breakfast or to the grocery store when we are on vacation, but we have decided not to spend the extra money on our next trip. DH is going to have to do the driving.

Depends on who you are renting from. I have gotten quotes from Alamo and it includes a 2nd driver for free.

We have added additional drivers at the kiosk and even in the middle of the rental period with no problem. Usually though, I try to use codes that give you the additional driver free (walmart, Orlando Magicard). That way I know exactly how much it will cost.

Adding a driver is usually $9.00 per day plus tax.

Is there a special code or something to get the 2nd driver for free?

Thanks,

Also, if you are a member of the Emerald Club through National, then your spouse is a free extra driver--I think it also includes anyone in your household, but I'd check on that to be sure.

Last week we rented from Dollar and I was the primary driver. I did NOT add DH on as a driver. No way was I paying an extra driver fee. He did do some driving but I did the most. I just can't justify that fee. ALL they want is more $$$. That car will be insured no matter who drives it.

Maybe I misunderstood (very possible since I have never rented a car :rolleyes1 ) but I thought that your primary car insurance will only cover an accident you are in with another person's car if you have the permission of the vehicle's owner to drive it. And if you don't tell the rental company about the 2nd driver, that person doesn't have their "permission" to drive it, and then wouldn't be covered if in an accident. Am I way off?
:confused3
