Car rental codes

Just wondering if anyone here has tried a lot of different codes on a consistent basis to find out if any one discount rate is consistently better. I use AARP (showing my age here) a lot and usually find it gets me an equal or lower rate than BJ's or a AAA code that I have. However I often still have to jump between rental companies - sometimes one company gives a lower rate than the other even though both offer discounts to AARP. Any opinions would be appreciated. Sharing information we may all get better rates. Thanks.

If you rent with National, you can use a discount code (like Sams Club) and use a coupon (such as Entertainment Cards $20 off a weekly rental). This combination has worked the best for me. I have tried some of the codes at mousesavers.com, but I have found that only National lets you combine for the best price.

You can see all the various codes available at www.rentalcodes.com
In my most recent search for the best price at an MCO location, I found the lowest cost at travelocity.com with no codes or coupons at all!

Thanks to ncbyrne and letsbgoofy. I hadn't considered trying to combine discount codes with coupons. I just assumed that it was not possible. I had no idea there were so many discount codes for the car rental companies at www.rentalcodes.com. Trying to go through the codes to find the best price is an insanely complicated process. Is there any DVC person out there with inside knowledge of the car rental discount process? Is there any standard amount (10%?)allowed for discount codes or affilaiations with organizations? Can you ever be sure you are getting the best deal?

insanely complicated.

If you have not checked out the Mousesaver webpage- try there.
Mary has alot of discount codes listed and will explain how to combine for National.

I also watched this board and when someone posts a good rate I try to get it(I usually don't! )

Yes, it is an insanely complicated process and one I do all the time for my trips. When I find a good rate, I do share. The best combination I have found is the old DC code with a 20.00 coupon from BJ's. This was with National. The cost for 8 days EA (I got an Impala) was 148.72. This was for 8/31/03 - 9/8/03. AARP was second best with the coupon, same time frame 167.31.

To get a good rate is something you simply have to work for, tedious as it appears. IMHO, if you don't want to do it and there are no leads out there, you need to hire a TA.

I don't mind doing the work. Just every now and then I wish companies could be a little more straight forward with their rates.

Me too, LOL. And, actually, they are, you just have to find the correct rate code.
