We'll be renting a car for the 1st time for our December trip. What is the best way to go about reserving one - Far in advance or closer to the trip?

As of right now, all the places I've checked seem very expensive.

I always book my rental once I have my flight times. 99% of the time I use National with a BJs code and coupon. Then I check at least once a week using a new reservation. If the price goes down, I book the new ressie, then cancel the old one. Too many times when I've tried to modify, something goes wrong.

You'll find that rental rates will flucuate due to supply and demand. You could make a couple of reservations with different agencies - just remember to cancel the ones you don't want!!! Also check mousesavers for various rates and codes...

Good luck!!! :upsidedow

I do the same thing, book car now, and just keep checking for new codes, coupons, and rates.

I am also booking for Dec 07, 12-28. I have been searching for about 30 min a day, checking Dollar, Alamo and National. From what I have paid in the past, the rates are quite high right now. I am going to find the cheapest rate I can, book it, and then change it when (hopefully) the rates drop. I have done this each time we have done to Orlando. The rates seem to change weekly, and sometimes daily, so I check frequently and when I can find a cheaper rate I just cancel the first ressie and make a new one!

My December dates are December 14-23. I have booked a mini van for $280.46 from Dollar. I found a GREAT code on mousesavers.com to get such a great rate. Also, Mousesavers states that Dollar is located in the airport terminal, so that'll be very nice. I will continue to check for cheaper prices about once a week, but I'm doubting I'll find a greater deal than that. Good luck!

Edit:Figured it out. Got a minivan for $318 for 10 days!

Not bad at all!

Thanks!
